US version of the all new Genesis G90 sedan

As you can see, this is exactly the same car that went on sale in Korea a while ago.
Looks like they didn't change a thing.
(They couldn't even figure out how to hide the horrible black plastic on the grille. Which I guess is for the laser cruise control)
It doesn't look bad. And it's certainly no more boring than an Audi A8.
But for a "new" brand, it just doesn't stand out. At all.

(I saw one in the flesh a couple of months ago in Joshua Tree. And I can tell you that the car is totally invisible...)

Same thing inside. Even though it's all new, it is already old fashioned.
It looks like (because it is) an old Korean executive's company car.

The previous Equus (sold as a Hyundai) started at $62 500. And I bet this, now being its own brand and all, will be more.
While it will still be a lot less than the German competition, it won't matter at all. Since German car buyers don't even look at anything else.

It will also cost a bit less than the Lexus LS.

But the new Genesis brand has zero image. While Lexus still has a highly regarded quality image.
And there is an all new LS coming out really soon.

It looks like they are trying to do what Lexus did decades ago. Offer a super luxury full size car, and a less expensive mid size one (G80)
I am sure the G90 is solid, super quiet and comfortable, fast and just plain nice an many ways.
But this is 2016. Not 1986. And the market for these things is shrinking every day. (sad but true)

So basically, all I can say to Genesis is: Good luck with that.

The true test for the Genesis brand will be their upcoming crossovers and SUVs...

2017 Genesis G80

Basically a Hyundai Genesis with small revisions.
Which, I guess, is fine. Since it will be much more popular than the big G90 sedan, it will help the new brand.
The real news will be when they launch an all new SUV next year.
Since it will sell much more than any of their sedans. That model will actually put the brand on the map.
For now, they just have a rebadged mid sized sedan and the big giant luxury boat (almost) no one will actually buy.

Engines on the G80 are the regular 3.8 Liter V6 with 315HP  or a 3.3 Liter V6 turbo with 365HP.
The Turbo is available with a new Sport version of the sedan.

New Genesis Concept coming up.

Hyundai will show a concept version of their "3 series fighter" at the New York auto show in a few days.
No doubt it will look nice.
Since they usually have great looking concepts (Like that super good looking Coupe a few months ago)
Unfortunately, they also have a history of turning these concepts into super boring/uninspired production models.
I guess that coupe concept was supposed to be a preview of the new G90/Equus. And look what happened there...

So we can only hope...

As I mentioned before, they will first rebadge the existing Hyundai Genesis sedan as the G80 for the new luxury brand.

Upcoming Genesis SUV

I know this is NOT a good picture.
(This was sent to me from Europe and I am trying to get a better version of it.)

Hyundai has mentioned a couple of SUVs for the all new Genesis brand.
One full size and a mid size one.
On top of the new G80 sedan (A face lifted Hyundai genesis), a new coupe and an all new RWD compact sedan.
It all sounds pretty good.

I cannot tell if this is supposed to be the big SUV or the smaller one...(looks like it says XG something...)

We should see the real thing sooner than letter, since the large luxury SUV market is much more lucrative than the large luxury sedan market.
Jus ask Cadillac...

All new Hyundai EQ900/Genesis G90

The one pictured here is the Korean Version, the EQ900.
So there might still be some small differences with our Genesis G90.

It looks OK. Maybe it's more impressive in person.
But it still has that "a few years ago" feeling to it. A few steps behind the best.
It does look better than the current one, but not as great as that 2 door concept we saw just a few months ago. Not even close.

Of course, it is quite cheaper than the German rivals. But really, not a true competition since a Mercedes or BMW owner will never consider this. No matter what.

More engines are available now. A V6, V6 Turbo and the usual V8.

The interior especially, seems a bit behind in style. Especially after seeing the new Volvo S90 and Mercedes E Class.

I wonder if they will sell many more of this one than the current version.
It's biggest competition is actually the Lexus LS. Which is all new in just a few months.

That should be interesting...

Super grainy pictures of the all new Genesis G90

I know, these are not very flattering.
I am sure the actual thing is much more impressive than this...

Still. These are probably some of the last spy shots of the big Hyundai/Genesis before we see the
official stuff. So why not...

Genesis G90

This is the replacement for the Hyundai Equus.

And, so far, looking the part of an expensive sedan. Unlike the new Cadillac CT6.
(Which is such a huge disappointment in real life)

They claim it will cost the same as the current model. So figure around $62 000.
(although it might actually be cheaper since the base model will now be a V6)

They still say it is a competitor to the BMW 7 series and the Mercedes S Class. Which is it not. Since BMW and Mercedes buyers (especially high end) almost never look at anything else.

But now that is is its own brand (kind of) and not sold as a Hyundai, it might actually have a much better chance against Lexus and Cadillac.
Plus, it will (hopefully) get all the advertising money that comes with launching a new brand.

I think this could repeat what Lexus did with the original LS sedan .
An attractive, less expensive,  alternative to some of the established players. (Lexus was also brand new then)

The current LS sedan starts at around $73 000.
The poor CT6 starts at $54 000. But that's for a 2.0 Liter Turbo.
Otherwise you pay $56 000 for the V6. Or $65 000 for the V6 Turbo AWD.

As for leasing, (Since most of these big sedans are leased anyway, Lexus offers the LS for $799 a month with $5000 due at signing.
While the current Equus is $669 a month with $2500 due at signing.
Not that huge of a difference. (Although again, the V6 would be less.)

The G90 V6 might be priced at around the same, or even less, than the CT6 V6.
While looking 100 times more like the luxury car it is supposed to be.

This could be interesting...

Hyundai Vision G Concept Coupe

Besides the stupid name, this is actually quite stunning.
And quite amazing for a Hyundai.
I think this is the 1st Hyundai design that truly looks like a luxury model to me.
It even has a British car feel to it. Almost old fashion.
Quite surprising.

There was a rumor last year about the next Genesis coupe becoming more of a luxury coupe.
This would definitely fit the bill.
Except that Hyundai concepts have never, ever become production designs.
They have been teasing us with great concepts for years.

Let's hope it changes with next years all new Genesis Coupe.
