Toyota X-Prologue EV: new teaser...

Toyota will finally show us what their first EV will look like. The top photo already shows something that could actually look really nice.

But also, something that is quite different from what we saw last year (Bottom pic)

The new teaser shows a soft and rounded design that is nothing like what they were teasing before. Which is kind of strange. Did they change their minds altogether after releasing these pictures last year?

Toyota is a huge company and even though they are late to the EV game, they should not be underestimated. They will quickly become a major player. I think their main competitor will be VW, not Tesla.

They have a much better quality reputation than VW. And so far, VW.s ID designs are pretty underwhelming. Or even horrible (ID6). If the new EVs from Toyota turned out to be attractive they could crush VW in the marketplace. At least in the US. We will see more in a week.

Now, poor Honda and Mazda are REALLY late to the game...

2021 Hyundai Tucson: Vs. the Vision T Concept

It is no secret the next generation Tucson design is a production version of the gorgeous Vision T concept we saw late last year.
Which looked fantastic.

Upfront, you can tell things have been toned down a bit 9of course) The side "vents' aren't so huge anymore. but it does look pretty similar. Including the crazy looking LED signature.

the rear end, at least the lights, seem very different from the concept.
Not sure why, since the ones on the concept didn't look that crazy. They look a lot taller too.

Just like the new Elantra, this could end up being a pretty radical design for Hyundai.
At least, it will be different and interesting. And that great!

New Nissan Magnite: production Vs-Concept

The little Magnite concept was just introduced a few days ago, and we already have a pitcue of the production version.
Which, as expected, seems to be almost the same thing.

The production model will be powered by a tiny 1.0 Liter Turbo with 100HP.
And it is about 2 inches smaller than the Kicks.

This new Nissan is so far only scheduled for the Inidan market and a few other countries. There is, so far, no plans to sell it in Europe or the US.

2021 Hyundai Tucson interior teaser: no tablet!

The new teaser sketch from Hyundai is probably a slightly simplified version of the new interior.
While the second photo from a prototype probably doesn't show the final trims and textures.

Still, this is already looking great. This is exactly how a center screen should be positioned.
Not an afterthought like in the 2021 Camry. Or many other cars these days. The designers actually came up with an elegant and original way to include it in the general design.

The next generation Tucson could very well become a huge hit for Hyundai. The current generation is doing OK. But with just under 138 000 of them sold last year, it really is no match for the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4. (With yearly sales of over 380 000 and almost 450 000 for the Toyota!)

I think the next Tucson could become one of the major players. And also spell trouble for the all-new Nissan Rogue.

What do you think?

Could this become the huge hit Hyundai needs to compete with Toyota and Honda?

2021 Mitsubishi Outlander: pretty close to the concept.

We all knew the Engelberg concept was a preview of the next generation Mitsubishi Outlander.
And it seems they have been able to stay pretty close to the original design.
At least the new Outlander will stand out a bit from the crowd.
Another way to make it stand out would be for Mitsubishi to really improve the Plug-in Hybrid system by offering a longer EV range. (now only 22 miles) And make it standard.

Otherwise, in a sea of Hybrid RAV-4s, CR-Vs and Escapes, they have no chance.
No chance because nobody even knows they are still around in the first place.
No one is ever considering getting a Mitsubishi anymore. And that's too bad.
As they did make some really cool cars for many years.

Offering a plug-in hybrid for the price of a regular Hybrid would be a way to re-enter the conversation.
That, and tons of advertizing!

We haven't seen the production interior yet, but it should also be pretty close to the concept above.
Since that interior is modern but not really futuristic anymore.

Let's hope Mitsubishi stays in the US long enough to launch the new Outlander.
Make it really interesting and price it aggressively. And again, advertize it!

2021 Hyundai Tucson: hybrid model caught?

Not only the new Tucson already looks pretty nice, but it will probably come as a hybrid as well.
While I am not a Hyundai expert, it looks like these blue Hyundai logos on the wheels could mean a hybrid version(?)
This would compete directly with the Rav-4, CR-V and Escape. Since all these offer hybrid versions.
But not the all-new 2021 Nissan Rogue. At least not yet.

From what we have seen so far of the next Tucson, this will give Hyundai quite an attractive and competitive offering.

2021 Kia Sonet: how about another small SUV from Kia?

Yes, there is yet another Kia crossover/SUV thing on the way.

This is, so far, mostly for the Indian market.
But I am sure, Kia will be very tempted to bring it over. Just like Hyundai did with the Venue.

It looks cute enough. With a smaller grille than the Venue. Too bad the interior is inspired by the new Sorento. Looks like it uses similar cheezy looking air vents. Lots of shape and silver trim everywhere could make for a very busy looking small interior...

This is the Sonet concept from last year. As you can see, this was basically just a pre-production model with some funky trims.

What do you think?
Should Kia bring the Sonet over here? Where it would compete with both the Hyundai Venue and Kia's own Soul?

Subaru Levorg: a new one on the way

Subaru will soon release an all new generation of their sporty Levorg Wagon.
Which is basically the production version of the "fake/pre-production model" concept we saw a few months ago.
(The blue on is the current model)

It is a more compact wagon, about 7 inches shorter than the Outback. The Levorg is sold in many countries, but not the US.
I guess Subaru is selling so many Outbacks they just don't want to take a chance .
Although it seems that maybe an offroad style Levorg (LIke the Crosstrek) would fit nicely between the Crosstrek and the Outback.

What do you think? Should Subaru bring ther Levorg over here?

2021 Nissan Ariya: early news and pix...

As we already know, the production version of the Ariya is shockingly similar to last year's concept.
(although, what's with the 2 shark fins???)

So far this is what we know.
It is still at least a year away in the USA. Since it will be available in Japan in about a year, and in the US a bit later.
The range is up to 300 miles. With the larger battery, and 2WD.
And of course, less with AWD or the smaller battery.

And it is now expected to start at around $40 000 in the US. Not the rumored $35 000.
And that will also be for the smaller battery.
So basically, $40 000 will probably get you a FWD Crossover with around 250 miles range.
Which is a bit more expensive than the Hyundai Kona EV or Chevy Bolt.
So far, this seems really nice. But not a game changer I was expecting.

More very soon.

2021 Ford Bronco: more pix!

There is basically no bad picture of the new Bronco.
It is just that good looking.

I am not into trucks at all. And I never go off-road. Yet, I would love one of these!
The Bronco will appeal to many. Not just off-road fans. This is just a great looking retro design with tons of personality.
Let's just hope the on-road behavior is decent. I hear even the current Wrangler is pretty tough to drive on the freeway or around town. If this is more refined in any way, it'll be an even bigger hit.

Apparently, the top is easier to remove than the one on the Wrangler. And can be done by one person. Still. It looks like quite a job that also requires tools.
You basically have to plan in advance if you want the top or not. And, as you can see, you can store it behind the back seat and take the parts with you. But that takes all the available cargo space.
( I wonder if part of the roof can just retract, like a large sunroof. Or not...)

Power comes from a 2.3 Liter Turbo r a 2.7 Liter Turbo V6.
5 versions are available: Base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, and Badlands.
the base starts at $28 500 for 2 doors or $33 200 for 4 doors.
Of course, tons of options, packages are available.

I guess most of them will be at around $40 000.
The base price is just about $200 more than the smaller Jeep Wrangler.

Production starts early next year. (If things don't get worse...)

What do you think of the new Bronco?

Mazda CX-5 spy shot: what's going on?

Mazda announced last year they would not have any brand new models for another 2 years. At least.
Which means no new Mazda6 or CX-5 any time soon.

But this prototype was recently caught in Europe. And it looks exactly like the current CX-5. So I'm not sure what's going on. Except maybe a very slight "facelift" upfront. Not visible from this angle.
And a new interior?

I think Mazda will be just fine with no new models until 2022. Since they have already upgraded the Mazda3 with a new Turbo option.
The CX-5 might be getting a few changes. And the 6 doesn't really need anything. It is basically as good as it can get until the all-new generation comes out.
Which will be quite a game-changer in the segment since it will offer RWD from a new platform, and a 3.0 Liter inline 6 cylinder.
Which would really make their already great sedan a sportier and classier, yet roomy, alternative to SUVs.

What do you think is going on with the picture above?
A mid-cycle facelift or a very early test mule for the next generation?

2021 Toyota Corolla Cross: Mini Rav-4!

I think this looks pretty nice. A good move from Toyota to design this as a mini Rav-4.
Which is one of the most popular cars around these days.
So why not.
The interior looks lie a cross between the Corolla and the Rav-4. In a way, this could actually, maybe, steal a few sales from the "real Rav-4".

At least in Thailand (where it is being introduced), it will be available with a choice of a 1.8 Liter engine with 140HO, and a hybrid version with 170HP.
It is about 5 inches longer than a Honda HR-V.

Not 100% sure this will end up in the US yet. But it would really be a stupid move not to offer this in the US. A great move would be to make it a "Hybrid-only" model fo our market. Just like the new Sienna and Venza.

I think a hybrid-only version priced competitively against its "gas only" competition would clean up.

What do you think?

2021 Nissan Rogue: How about a nice, casual video walkaround.

This is an early preview/walkaround of the all-new Nissan Rogue.

Very interesting to see it in real life. (kind of)

The interior seems very nice. Although I am not a fan at all of the "Bentley wannabe" pattern on the leather seats. But I think it is specific to the high-end model only.

The screen looks much nicer than on the official shots. And so does the wood trim on the dash.

The version previewed here is loaded and probably costs over $36 000. It would be nice to see a more mainstream model. The one most people will actually buy.

But so far, this looks very nice. But again, it is really too bad no hybrid or plug-in hybrid seems to be planned at all. A hybrid Rogue would be a great compliment to the EV only upcoming Ariya.

2021 Ford Bronco: a look inside.

Keep in mind this is still a prototype, and the interior parts don't show the final textures yet.

I think this looks exactly like it should. Modern yet tretro. And quite simple.
It already seems to match the exterior design perfectly. The screen looks pretty huge, and is still very nicely integrated to the dashboard.

This will not only make life very tough on the Jeep ranger, but it could very well be competing with low end versions of the new Land Rover Defender. Which starts at over $50 000.

Audi Q4 Sportsback E-Tron

The Audi lineup is getting quite complicated these days.
Every SUV model seems to have a more slanted "Sportsback" version.
And the upcoming EV "E-Tron" models seem to be all over the place.

We already know there is an all-new Q4 E-Tron coming up. Looking like any other Audi SUV. Which means like a cross between the Q3 and Q5.
And of course, this model will have its Sportsback version.
Which we will see as a concept version first.
As you can see from the pic above, the concept is basically the production version without door handles.
Why even bother??

The interesting part is the price. As the regular Q4 E-Tron is supposed to start at around $45 000/$50 000.
Much cheaper than the current "regular size" $78 000 E-Tron.
And it will qualify for incentives, which will make it a lot cheaper than the tesla Molde Y.

More on this very, very soon.
