European version of the new Honda Civic Hatchback

Words are colliding in my head to describe this...

What a horrible mess. Just when you though the US version was overdone, Honda proves us it can do even worse.
I mean, just look at the amount of crappy looking black plastic trim all over this car.
This is a bad design made worse.

Pretty amazing.

A while ago, I was pretty excited when Honda announced the return of the hatchback in the US Civic line. What a great idea! What could go wrong?

This has to be maybe the worse Honda design of all time. And pretty much the worse looking hatchback on the market.
Here, it will compete with "beauties" like the Mazda3, Cruze hatchback, Focus etc...
In Europe, it is in the same segment as the Golf, Astra, Megane etc...

I just cannot imagine who would want to spend their hard earned money in such a visual nightmare.

Honda should be ashamed.

All new Ford Ka+

This is both baffling and sad.

Sad, because Ford has been coming out with one good design after another for years.
Especially sad, because the first generation Ka was such a cool and different car.
This is not only plain ugly, it also looks really cheap and already old.
It does have a strange 3rd world look to it. Or something from Russia or China.

Baffling because.. Why??
Why do they need this car in the first place?

Is the market for a super boring tiny 4 door hatchback that huge in Europe?
Other offerings in the segment from Peugeot, Renault or Opel look futuristic next to this.
Even the 8 year old Fiat 500 looks 1000 times better than this.

Why? Why?? Why???
This is the  first generation Ka. Which came out in 1996.
And stayed in production until 2008. Yes, that is 12 years!
That's what a good modern and original does. It stays good, modern and original for a long time!

The second generation was much more conservative.
But this new one already looks old...

Sad...

2017 Audi A5

Wow... How sad is this.

An official teaser from Audi, showing a camouflage prototype of the "all new" A5.

And, of course, it looks like the same car as the one we have now.
Just like the A4, it will be a slightly squared off version of the current model.
With the new A4 terrible interior. Which is much worse than it was before.

The current A5 interior is still very, very nice.

I always wonder why car makers use pictures of their camouflaged prototypes as teasers.
Since we have seen much better pictures of that car already...

Acura CDX Interior

I have to admit, they did a fine job making sure the Acura version ends up different and more upscale than the Honda HR-V it is based on. Really.

I mean, sure, you can still tell. Just like the outside of the car.
It seems that most interior parts are new.
It also uses a different, more powerful engine. It has an 8 speed automatic instead of a CVT.
And that super large ugly grille the Honda version doesn't have.

Honda has already said they have no "current" plans to import this to the US.
But you know they will. It's just a matter of time.
Just like Audi was never going to bring us the small Q3.

It's like a drug. They just can't help it. The US market is so hungry for any kind and any size of SUVs.
The temptation for profits is just to great.
Sooner or later, all SUVs end up over here.

All new Honda Avancier Video

One of the best example of something "so bad it is great".

This has to be one of the most obnoxious car videos ever.
And the fun part is that it is for one of the worst looking car ever. Which makes it a truly great watch.

The CGI, the soundtrack, the directing, the "madame Tussault inspired" acting.
Everything comes together to created a truly wretched experience.
Something horrible for all senses.

Just like the design of the car, this video is displaying a new low for humanity.
(Or maybe just the car business...)

Enjoy!

More pictures of the new Acura CDX

Not as "shiny" in these early official shot.
But still pretty ugly.

Being based on the HR-V it is basically a raised up Honda Fit.
Except now it has 182HP from the turbo 1.5 Liter and an 8 speed auto instead of a CVT.

Still... Fit.

They mention the Mercedes GLA as a competition. A Mercedes!
The GLA is based on the CLA. Itself sharing a lot with the European A and B class models.
Which, while being the cheapest cars Mercedes make, are still not in the same class as a $17 000 Fit.

And again, look at that face!
That grille is ghastly in the first place.
On top of it, it is way too big on that little car!

The whole thing is only ugly, it is also sad.

2017 Buick Envision price

The first Buick imported from China isn't cheap!

For now, 2 models will be available.
Priced at $43 000 and $45 600.
They all get GM's 2.0 Liter Turbo with a 6 speed auto (Not even the newest/better 8 speed)

They both come pretty loaded, although the big sunroof is still an option on both (?)
Apparently, a couple of cheaper models will be available at the end of the year. (weird...)

At $43 000, it's obvious the benefits of cheaper labor cost in China have NOT been passed  on to the consumer!

Let's compare to he competition. With other "pretty loaded" models:

-An Audi Q5 with Premium package is $43 700. (And that includes a sunroof)
-A Mercedes with a couple of packages is $45 000.
-The new and much better looking Lincoln MKX "Reserve"is $46 300.

We'll see if the Envision turns out to be popular in the US.
I am sure "made in China" will never ever be mentioned. So customers will have no idea.
And basically, anything that is raised up and has a hatch in the back sells these days...

But to me, this looks pretty boring already. It really has no personality.
I mean it's not "Acura ugly" or "Lexus weird". Just blah.
And that interior is borderline vulgar (At least in pictures)

I sat a few times in the Lincoln MKX and was really, really impressed.
I think this would be my choice if I needed something like that.

2017 Acura MDX

They did it. They finally got rid of that weird "beak/shield" grille they were putting on everything.

And they replaced it by... another ugly design!
I mean what the hell is that??!

And they just added a giant version of their logo on it, to make sure we know what it is.
(That logo is so great looking too....)

This "refreshed" MDX looks even older than last year's model. It is terrible.

I think it's time for Acura to give up. Give up on designing their own car.
Call Giugiaro to the rescue ! Anyone but the people they have right now.
And do it fast.

It is basically impossible to find a worst looking SUV for the price, really.
This looks like a cheap eastern european car.

The sad thing is, Acuras are really good cars. They drive really nice and are super reliable.

Wow.....

2017 Subaru Impreza Sedan

The production model (Top) is, again, different enough from the recent concept that it pretty much ruins the design.
I mean, the Impreza has been one of the worst looking small sedan for years now.
Everyone is making an effort to stand out a little bit. Improve their design. (Look at the Civic!)

Instead, Subaru is constantly teasing us with decent to great concepts and never ever follows through.
This looks like it came out 10 years ago already. And it's not even out yet.
Inside, things seem better than before and more upscale.

But nothing we haven't seen before. Everywhere. From everyone else....

Sad...

No Future for the Avenir

You can stop dreaming.

Buick said there will not be a production version of the amazing Avenir concept from last year.
The 2017 Lacrosse is the closest thing we'll get...

Sad, but realistic. Since the Avenir would have been built on the same platform as the new Cadillac CT6. And it would have killed the CT6.

Cadillac's sad looking large sedan would have had no chance against this.

And you know what, I predict the same thing will happen with the equally amazing Avista Concept...

2017 Lincoln Continental

Again, what we saw last year was not a concept, really.
It was this production car with more chrome. A lot more chrome.

I didn't like it then and I like it even less now.
As I said before, this should have never been called "Continental". That name comes with a history, heritage and prestige this doesn't have at all.

Outside it doesn't look any better than any sedans from Acura. It's not ugly. Just invisible.
Inside, the vulgar looking chrome from last year has been replaced by some horrible looking wood trim (At least in the version pictured above)
And just like outside, it has zero personality.

I really like recent Lincolns. I drove a MKZ for 3 days and really liked it. And their new MKX and MKC are great.

They were on the right path. What the hell happened???

Hollywood sight

I saw this in the streets a few days ago. Just south of Sunset Blvd.

A very rare, but sad sight indeed.
An old Lotus Elite. Hadn't seen one in... well, I'm not even sure I've ever seen one in real life.

It was produced from 1974 to 1982. This one has the side markers, so it was (is?) a US model.
Seems like they only made 2535 of these. So this is a rare car.
It's really too bad to see it in that shape.
Although I do understand something like this must be quite expensive to fix.
But, it's obviously still running!

This is what it is supposed to look like.

Quite a crazy design for its time. Although, I do remember many really modern (crazy) british designs from the 70's.
Like the Rover 3500 or the Austin Princess (Anyone remembers that one?) were great designs that, I think, still look modern today.

Volvo S90 VS.Jaguar XF

I keep comparing the 2 cars. I know...

But, to me, they are both shocking in their own way.
The S90 interior is shocking because it is so great. And coming from such a "blah brand" like Volvo. A brand that most people had written off. A brand that is not associate with style.

The XF is also shocking. Because how bad it looks.
And that is coming from a very prestigious brand with a huge history of style and elegance.
The Volvo interior is so good looking. And even original.
It is truly competing with the best in its class.

And,Volvo is saying it will be priced under the $50 000 XC90.
While the Jag starts at $52 000!

Meanwhile, at Jaguar, things are flat and boring. Almost sad.
I mean look at this!

Basically devoid of any style. A coldness that was never associated with British cars before.
( I sat in it, and I can tell you, it's not better in person)
And while Volvo has found an amazing way to display wood, Jaguar seems to be doing its best to hide it.

We have officially entered the "Bizarro World".

Auto Show Quick notes: Interiors

The new Mini Clubman is really roomy.
This could truly work as a compact family car. On top of that, everything feels and looks good.
(Except the never ending amount of shiny bits everywhere...)
On the other hand, this is sad.

The US/China Only Passat interior looked old when it came out back in 2011. Almost 5 years later all it gets (At least inside) is some new trim. Barely.
So now it looks... really old.

At the show, the Mazda6 sits about 20 feet away from the Passat.
And what a difference 20 feets make!  It is quite amazing. The Mazda feels and looks like another class of car altogether. While pretty much at the same price.

It seems that about anything it its class has a much better interior than the Passat.
Sad...

AutoShow Quick notes: Doors.

Jaguar XF sedan. Boring outside, boring inside.
Doesn't look or feel like a Jaguar. This interior door design is as blocky/uninspired as they get.

 Meanwhile, inside the Mazda CX-9...
