Of course the 2020 Ford Escape has a larger screen in China...

The 2 top photos are the Chinese market model.

And, like most Fords sold over there, it has a much larger screen available than the equivalent US models.
But in the case of the Escape, it also has a more upscale and different dashboard and console design.
The whole thing does seem more upscale. And less like the 2019 Ford Focus interior. (The one not sold over here anymore.)
Outside, the Chinese model also has a different front end.

Interesting...

One bad idea; The Nissan Murano Hybrid.

A terrible idea.
Basically, it'll cost $3000 more to gain about 4MPG.
26/30 vs 21/28 for the regular model.

We were all making fun of GM a few years ago when they were doing the same thing with their "mild Hybrid" models.
Charging around $3000 for it. Same stupid idea.
At least, GM learned from that mistake.

But not Nissan. You thought they did when they canceled the Hybrid version of the Pathfinder because no one was buying it.
(No one was stupid enough.)
But now they repeat the mistake by offering the same power train (The one nobody wanted) in the Murano.

How weird???

This was unveiled a while ago as a "China only" model. So I am not sure if the one sold here will be imported from China or not.
No matter what, there are supposed to be only about 600 of them in the US.

Another weird thing. Why even bother???

2017 Honda Gienia

This is yet another small Honda based on the Fit.
This time it looks like a 4 door coupe version of the regular Fit. More or less...

The car pictured above isn't look that great. With its lack of trim around the windows and small wheels.

It is based on the Concept B we saw a while ago. And again, this is not planned for the US. Or anywhere outside of China. Yet...
This is the Concept version.
Which is actually really close to the production model and does look fine.

New Buick GL8 Minivan

Another "for China only" Buick.

The GL8 minivan has been around for about 16 years.
The current generation came out in 2010. So it is time for a new one.

The one pictured above will follow the trend of replacing the V6 with a 2.0 Liter Turbo.
And of course, it's not coming over here.
Unless Chrysler sells millions of the all new Pacifica and everyone, all of a sudden, has to have a Minivan.
In that case, I am sure GM will gladly import a few of these...

Just as a bit of extra info. This is the current one.
Which is still quite good looking.

2017 Chevrolet Cavalier

No, it's not actually coming back.
Well, it is. But in China only.

The new Cavalier is smaller and cheaper than the Cruze. It is powered by a small 1.5 Liter engine.
And I am sure Chevrolet is not interested in another small sedan for its us portfolio.

From what we can see on these pictures, it will not be missed.
Unlike the new Mazda CX4, this is something I do not wish to see in the streets. Ever.

The good news is, we won't.

No "Next" Buick Verano for the US

There IS already a brand new Buick Verano. Based on the new Opel Astra.
But it is just for China, and apparently, it will stay there.

Which is kind of too bad. I mean, I know the market is changing to SUVs.
Small near luxury sedans aren't really setting the world on fire these days...

For Buick, it went from 31% of their sales in 2012. To 68% predicted for next year.
So, of course, it will probably be replaced by a compact SUV, between the Encore and Envision.

But you would think  a small sedan like this might still be worth it.
I mean it's already there. Designed, engineered etc...
It's not like it would cost a fortune.

Plus, GM has proven they have no ethical problem about importing cars from China to sell in the US.
Like the Envision and the CT6 Hybrid....

Mercedes E Class "L" = E Class Maybach?

Mercedes has just introduced a long wheelbase version of the new E Class in China.
For the Chinese market only.

Because of some odd local market taste it seems that every single car maker is offering "long wheelbase" versions of their sedans over there.
The same day, both Jaguar and Audi were showing long versions of the XF and A4.
Which is so strange and pretty much defeats the purpose of an other larger model all together.
I mean who would get a regular A6 when a "long A4" has even more legroom?

And BMW is also doing this with their SUVs!
It really seems like something out of the Bizarro World to me.

But, hey. Just look at that back seat.
Of course it's attractive to people who seat in the back and are driven most of the time.
But again, with the new E Class already being super luxurious, who would pick a regular S-Class over this?

Here is what they did. Mercedes did a lot of work on this.
Usually, carmakers design a longer rear door. (Plus roof etc...) But the longer versions don't look that different.
This one does.

Mercedes has been testing this Maybach version of the new E Class for a while now.
Which, as you can see, will basically be the same car as the Chinese E Class "L" model.

So there you go.
Why not sell this to everyone, everywhere...

All new Honda Avancier Video

One of the best example of something "so bad it is great".

This has to be one of the most obnoxious car videos ever.
And the fun part is that it is for one of the worst looking car ever. Which makes it a truly great watch.

The CGI, the soundtrack, the directing, the "madame Tussault inspired" acting.
Everything comes together to created a truly wretched experience.
Something horrible for all senses.

Just like the design of the car, this video is displaying a new low for humanity.
(Or maybe just the car business...)

Enjoy!

New Honda Avancier

That's right. Another SUV/Crossover thing from Honda.
Another ugly one.

At least the part where it says "for the Chinese market only" is good news.

The Avancier is a 5 seater that will be priced above the CR-V.
Powered by a new 2.0 Liter Turbo engine. Which will probably find its way under the hood of the next Accord.

There is nothing like this in the US lineup. Where Honda jumps from the CR-V to the 7/8 seater Pilot.
Nissan has the Murano while Toyota offers a 5 seater version of the Highlander.

This looks like a mash up of a bunch of designs from a few other manufacturers.
It has zero personality of its own.
It is so bad it's almost weird...

If the name sounds familiar, it is because Honda did produce a car named Avancier before.
It was a tall wagon based on the Japanese Accord and sold over there from 1999 to 2003.
A bit boring, but not ugly like this poor guy above.

Now, let us all get on our knees and pray for this thing to never make it to the US market.
Please....

"All new" Chinese Citroen C6

I guess this is the most Chinese Citroen ever.
Which is of course, not a good thing. If fact, quite terrible...

It is quite blasphemous. The last C6 was one of the most modern scan ever. While this should, at best, be a boring VW sedan.

I guess the Chinese market is super conservative and there is no room for anything fun.
I mean look at that interior. Not 100% ugly, but nothing that should be labeled as  Citroen.

Basically, this "C6" is based on a Chinese sedan from DongFen called the A9.
Which, itself, is based on the Citroen C5.
So, nothing all new.
And look, the DongFen version does look like a VW!

Let's hope this C6 is never sold outside of China...

2017 Buick Envision price

The first Buick imported from China isn't cheap!

For now, 2 models will be available.
Priced at $43 000 and $45 600.
They all get GM's 2.0 Liter Turbo with a 6 speed auto (Not even the newest/better 8 speed)

They both come pretty loaded, although the big sunroof is still an option on both (?)
Apparently, a couple of cheaper models will be available at the end of the year. (weird...)

At $43 000, it's obvious the benefits of cheaper labor cost in China have NOT been passed  on to the consumer!

Let's compare to he competition. With other "pretty loaded" models:

-An Audi Q5 with Premium package is $43 700. (And that includes a sunroof)
-A Mercedes with a couple of packages is $45 000.
-The new and much better looking Lincoln MKX "Reserve"is $46 300.

We'll see if the Envision turns out to be popular in the US.
I am sure "made in China" will never ever be mentioned. So customers will have no idea.
And basically, anything that is raised up and has a hatch in the back sells these days...

But to me, this looks pretty boring already. It really has no personality.
I mean it's not "Acura ugly" or "Lexus weird". Just blah.
And that interior is borderline vulgar (At least in pictures)

I sat a few times in the Lincoln MKX and was really, really impressed.
I think this would be my choice if I needed something like that.

All new 2017 Acura CDX

As you can see, this one is also for the Chinese market.

It seems Honda has been making a push for Acura in China lately.
Trying to compete with European brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes. But also Buick and PSA's DS brand.
So they are basically coming out with Acura versions of everything Honda makes.

This is supposedly based on the Honda HR-V.
Although it looks closer to the next generation CR-V.
(You can see some CR-V spy shots HERE)

It is rumored to be powered by a 1.5 Liter Turbo. Which sounds similar to the current Civic.
And, again, what the next CR-V might be getting.

An HR-V based model sound pretty small for a luxury brand.
(Although I guess it would compete with the all new Audi Q2.)
It seems a CR-V based one would attract a larger audience. Competing with a bunch of other crossovers from Audi, Mercedes, BMW and more.
Plus, the size would fit better the US market.
It would really compete with the Lexus NX over here.

Whatever it is, it does look pretty boring.
And really, is that new grille an improvement over the old shield?
I don't think so.
It has a weird cheap 80's look to me.

Acura is another brand that needs to stand out a bit. And they don't. Year after year getting lost in the shuffle. Coming up with one invisible car after another.
Look at the Mercedes GLA.
A truly modern looking crossover from a luxury brand. It looks like nothing else yet sells like hotcakes!

Acura does need more. And it all starts with great designs.

LeEco LeSEE

I know, what a weird title.

LeEco is a Chinese company that is pretty much the equivalent of Netflix here (Even weirder right?)
They have a deal with Aston Martin to produce an all electric version of the rapid Sedan in 2018.
And, most important (or even weirder), they are the big investor behind the new Faraday Future electric car company.
That company still claims they are building a $1 billion car factory near Las Vegas.
(The whole thing sounds really, really fishy)

Faraday was not able to even show a running prototype of the car they are supposed to build in that factory.  (They had a stupid FF Zero1design study model a few months ago)
Since this is directly from the parent company, it might very well be that car. Or a version of it.

Of course, since this is a Chinese concept, it does come with outlandish claims/specs:

- The production version will come out "sooner than later". (good to know...)
- Will be made "In the US, China or elsewhere".
- Voice command for self drive and self park
- Front end doubles as smart screen
- Competes with Tesla (Like everything else these days)
- Production car will be "very close" to this concept
- 130MPH top speed
- No mention of range. At all. (Which is basically what people care the most in an EV...)

Here is a really obnoxious CGI video of the whole thing.
My advice: turn the sound off! The soundtrack is quite horrific.
(But fits perfectly the general obnoxious mood of the whole "art piece")

Hey, this might actually be all true. And really come out, who knows.
I mean I would be the first one to love a super good looking, futuristic luxury EV.
And yes, competition would be great for Tesla (They might start making more reliable cars)

At least, they didn't call it "LeCAR"...

2017 Mazda CX-4

More picture of the all new CX-4.
Basically, a sportier alternative to the CX-5.

Outside, there seems to be a bit of camouflage left on the chrome window surrounding.
Wheels are quite small, so this could also be a base model.

Inside, it does look really good. In line with recent Mazda designs.

So far, they claim China is the target market for this.
But I wouldn't surprised if it ends up in the US.

Let's hope...

Cadillac CT6 Plug-In, coming soon. From China

That's right..

GM has announced that, while the regular versions of the CT6 will be built in the US, the Plug-In Hybrid version will be exclusively built in China.
Even the ones sold in the US.

Pretty amazing, and I must say, sad. Cadillac is pretty much the most American of brands.
After the Buick Envision, GM is now getting ready to sell us Chinese made Cadillacs.
(They have already said that most Buicks won't be coming from the US within a few short years)

I guess, in a little while, it won't actually matter where things come from. We are already there with electronics where no one cars if every single one of them comes from China regardless of the brand.
So maybe there is nothing we can do about this.

I just feel sorry for the Cadillac workers. Who I am sure were pretty proud of putting together cars for such a legendary brand.
And also sad for GM. who doesn't seem to care.
But again, who really cares anymore...

On another note, I really don't think the CT6 in general will have much of an impact. I sat in the Plug in version, and, as I mentioned a few weeks ago, the interior is shockingly crappy.
Not only worse than any of the competition, but worse than existing Cadillac models like the CTS or XTS.

Not a good trend...

2017 Buick Envision

This is the first batch of the new Buick Envision, heading for the US.
From China....

So this is it. Chinese made Buicks are coming.

2017 Buick Envision

Nothing "all new" since this has been on sale in China for a while.

We now know that the US version will get the 2.0 Liter Turbo with 252HP.
With a 6 speed auto (Where is GM's new 8 speed?)

It is based on the same platform as the new Cadillac XT5.
And, I must say, the Buick interior (Even if it appears a bit "overdone" on these pix) seems to be 100 times more luxurious than the Cadillac version.
( I sat in the Cadillac and it is a sad thing inside)

But... The BIG news is that it will be imported from China.

I personally don't see this as good news. At all.
You know it won't be cheaper to buy because of it.
It just means more profits from GM.
And I'm not even talking about US jobs lost.

As far as quality. No one knows yet...

Coming to the US next summer.

2017 Buick Envision

The Envision is the midsize crossover Buick really needs. Right now.
The Enclave is old. A new one is still at least a year (or two) away.
And the Encore is just too small to sell in big numbers.

So a Buick version of the Cadillac XT5 is what they need.
It came out in China a few months ago. Now we hear a USD version will be on sale next spring.
That's the good news.
The bad news? We also hear it will be imported from China.

Which is quite a big deal.
So far (as far as I know) the only mainstream Chinese import we get here is a few units of the Volvo S60.
Now Buick!

To calm things down, GM is only rumored to import 30 000 to 40 000 units a year.
But you know that if it's popular, they'll bring over plenty more.
And you know that once they get a taste of that cheap Chinese labor, there is no turning back.

And so it begins....
