Buick Cascada test drive coming up.

I just got a new Cascada to drive for a week.
This is a car I was really waiting for.

I really loved it when it was introduced as an Opel in Europe a couple of years ago. And I was one of these people who was hoping it would end up here as a Buick.
Well, here it is...

First thoughts:
I still love the design. It looks really great in person.
Like everyone has said before me, the interior is nice, but in a "3 to 5 year old GM" sort of way.
Lots of buttons, smallish screen weirdly angled back etc...

Otherwise so far it seems really quiet, and feels as solid as the good German car that it actually is.

I will report on it very soon.

New Buick GL8 Minivan

Another "for China only" Buick.

The GL8 minivan has been around for about 16 years.
The current generation came out in 2010. So it is time for a new one.

The one pictured above will follow the trend of replacing the V6 with a 2.0 Liter Turbo.
And of course, it's not coming over here.
Unless Chrysler sells millions of the all new Pacifica and everyone, all of a sudden, has to have a Minivan.
In that case, I am sure GM will gladly import a few of these...

Just as a bit of extra info. This is the current one.
Which is still quite good looking.

No "Next" Buick Verano for the US

There IS already a brand new Buick Verano. Based on the new Opel Astra.
But it is just for China, and apparently, it will stay there.

Which is kind of too bad. I mean, I know the market is changing to SUVs.
Small near luxury sedans aren't really setting the world on fire these days...

For Buick, it went from 31% of their sales in 2012. To 68% predicted for next year.
So, of course, it will probably be replaced by a compact SUV, between the Encore and Envision.

But you would think  a small sedan like this might still be worth it.
I mean it's already there. Designed, engineered etc...
It's not like it would cost a fortune.

Plus, GM has proven they have no ethical problem about importing cars from China to sell in the US.
Like the Envision and the CT6 Hybrid....

2017 Buick Envision price

The first Buick imported from China isn't cheap!

For now, 2 models will be available.
Priced at $43 000 and $45 600.
They all get GM's 2.0 Liter Turbo with a 6 speed auto (Not even the newest/better 8 speed)

They both come pretty loaded, although the big sunroof is still an option on both (?)
Apparently, a couple of cheaper models will be available at the end of the year. (weird...)

At $43 000, it's obvious the benefits of cheaper labor cost in China have NOT been passed  on to the consumer!

Let's compare to he competition. With other "pretty loaded" models:

-An Audi Q5 with Premium package is $43 700. (And that includes a sunroof)
-A Mercedes with a couple of packages is $45 000.
-The new and much better looking Lincoln MKX "Reserve"is $46 300.

We'll see if the Envision turns out to be popular in the US.
I am sure "made in China" will never ever be mentioned. So customers will have no idea.
And basically, anything that is raised up and has a hatch in the back sells these days...

But to me, this looks pretty boring already. It really has no personality.
I mean it's not "Acura ugly" or "Lexus weird". Just blah.
And that interior is borderline vulgar (At least in pictures)

I sat a few times in the Lincoln MKX and was really, really impressed.
I think this would be my choice if I needed something like that.

2017 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid

This is, so far, for the Chinese market.

We did have a hybrid version of the previous generation Lacrosse available over here.
For a few years. ( I even test drove one for a week)

It was an OK car. Had more power than the base 2.4 Engine. But it wasn't that amazing and the gas mileage wasn't that much better either. So, really, why???

They claim this one gets 50MPG. Which is, of course, in the Chinese test driving cycle.
But, GM said it is a 35% improvement.
Which, here, would mean around 40MPG combined.

Which wouldn't be bad at all for such a large car. Actually competing with the Lexus ES Hybrid .
This would be a good move for Buick in the US.
I mean, a large Buick with 40MPG.

The "old" Lacrosse was  not a true Hybrid. Instead, relying on that weird eAssist Technology from GM. ( A.K.A "eASS") Which usually resulted in just about a 3MPG increase for a $2000 price increase.
Not something anyone should ever consider.

With its new 1.8 Liter engine, the new version seems to be using the same power train as the 2016 Malibu.

I think a great move for Buick here would be to make it standard. Price the Hybrid the same as the V6 version.
Lincoln is already doing it with the MKZ, so why not...

Opel Adam not coming here as a Buick (?)

A while ago, after Buick announced the Adam would be sold in China as a Buick, everyone and their brother thought it meant the tiny car was also coming over here.
Even though GM never said that.
Now, these same people think it will never come here.
Because of what Buick's Duncan Aldred just said a few days ago :
"I wouldn't be looking for a small, B-segment car today".

GM never said we were getting the current version in the 1st place.
( I even seem to remember then saying it was never engineered to be sold in the US)
But I think there is still chance we might get the next one. Due out in at least two years, or more.

I mean, there is a market for this.
Especially this really cool, slightly raised up version pictured above.
Fiat still sold over 25 000 units of the regular 500 here last year.
(Over 42 000 back in 2012)

What do you think?

2017 Buick Encore

Since we saw it's European Opel clone a few weeks ago, there are no surprises here.
As predicted, it is an Opel Mokka with a Buick grille.
Which is just fine.

The new interior is a big improvement. It makes the old one look quite cartoony.

As for the engine, I am not sure what's new.
Here is the official PR:
" A unique 1.4 L Turbo with direct injection, more power, more torque and stop/start technology is available on most trims"

So I guess there is more power?
And MPG must be improved with stop/start.

They sold over 67 000 of these last year. Which is pretty good.
While Nissan sold a bit over 27 000 Jukes.
(The Juke's best year was 2014 with just 38 184 units)

This revised and even more attractive one should do quite well.

2017 Buick Encore

This is, technically, the Chinese version.
But our US model will be the same.
As you can see, it gets all the changes applied a few weeks ago to the Opel Mokka.

The one pictured here looks to be a base model. With tiny wheels and no fog lights.

So this is closer to what we'll be getting.
Just imagine the Opel with a Buick logo.

The Encore is also getting the Mokka's new dashboard.
And maybe a little bump in power as well.

No Future for the Avenir

You can stop dreaming.

Buick said there will not be a production version of the amazing Avenir concept from last year.
The 2017 Lacrosse is the closest thing we'll get...

Sad, but realistic. Since the Avenir would have been built on the same platform as the new Cadillac CT6. And it would have killed the CT6.

Cadillac's sad looking large sedan would have had no chance against this.

And you know what, I predict the same thing will happen with the equally amazing Avista Concept...

2017 Buick Envision

This is the first batch of the new Buick Envision, heading for the US.
From China....

So this is it. Chinese made Buicks are coming.

2017 Buick Envision

Nothing "all new" since this has been on sale in China for a while.

We now know that the US version will get the 2.0 Liter Turbo with 252HP.
With a 6 speed auto (Where is GM's new 8 speed?)

It is based on the same platform as the new Cadillac XT5.
And, I must say, the Buick interior (Even if it appears a bit "overdone" on these pix) seems to be 100 times more luxurious than the Cadillac version.
( I sat in the Cadillac and it is a sad thing inside)

But... The BIG news is that it will be imported from China.

I personally don't see this as good news. At all.
You know it won't be cheaper to buy because of it.
It just means more profits from GM.
And I'm not even talking about US jobs lost.

As far as quality. No one knows yet...

Coming to the US next summer.

2017 Buick Lacrosse

Again, the current Lacrosse is a car I really enjoy. So I don't think this is such a improvement, really.
I mean it is nice. But I really was expecting something more.
Something a bit closer to last year's Avenir concept.

The interior is very nice too. But so is the current one.
And that soft scoop over the rear wheels is a bit too reminiscent of what they've already done on a bunch of other GM cars. Like the Impala, new Malibu and even the new Cruze.

2017 Buick Lacrosse

I have always been a big fan of the current Buick Lacrosse.
It is (still) a really good looking car. With a very nice interior. And it really is a pleasure to drive.

But I must say, I was expecting a bit more for the all new one.
I mean, this looks fine. Slick. But it just doesn't seem such a big step forward.
Sure, when compared to what Audi does (Squaring off and tracing current designs), this is much better.
At least it doesn't look like the previous one...

These pictures are from China, so there is still (a very tiny bit of) hope that it is the "Chinese only" version. Something GM did with the new Cruze.

I will know in a few hours. As I am heading to the Los Angeles Auto Show early tomorrow morning.

I knew I saw this shape before...

I mean really. This is a bit too close .

By the way, this is what they teased us with last year. As the future or large Buick sedans.

I guess not. Or not yet...

2017 Buick Envision

The Envision is the midsize crossover Buick really needs. Right now.
The Enclave is old. A new one is still at least a year (or two) away.
And the Encore is just too small to sell in big numbers.

So a Buick version of the Cadillac XT5 is what they need.
It came out in China a few months ago. Now we hear a USD version will be on sale next spring.
That's the good news.
The bad news? We also hear it will be imported from China.

Which is quite a big deal.
So far (as far as I know) the only mainstream Chinese import we get here is a few units of the Volvo S60.
Now Buick!

To calm things down, GM is only rumored to import 30 000 to 40 000 units a year.
But you know that if it's popular, they'll bring over plenty more.
And you know that once they get a taste of that cheap Chinese labor, there is no turning back.

And so it begins....

2017 Buick LaCrosse

Here is the second official teaser for the all new LaCrosse.
Looking quite slick.
Good news since the current car has been around for a while.
The new version of the 3.6 Liter V6 will be available.
But I'm sure the 2.0 Liter Turbo will be the base engine. Since it is in the more expensive CTS.

Here are two pictures of the real thing.
At least for the Chinese market. Looking pretty much like the same car in the teaser.
So it's actually not that exciting...
Unless GM has 2 different designs of the same model. Like they do with the 2016 Cruze.

So there might still be hope for something better...

Buick Verano Hatch

Buick is getting ready to introduce a new hatchback version
of the Verano. In China.
I really doubt we will ever see this here.

As you can see, the Chinese Verano is the exact same car as the new European Opel Astra.
(The new hatchback also comes with a sporty GS version )

We should see the US version of the new Verano really soon. As a sedan...

2017 Buick Lacrosse

Buick is, so far, only teasing the front end of their redesigned large sedan.

It does look nice. But as we saw before (last week's spy shot) it won't look anything like the stunning Avenir concept from last year. (Maybe the Avenir might become another sedan, above the Lacrosse.)

We will see the whole thing next month at the L.A auto show.

2016 Buick Verano

The all new redesigned Verano was caught in the US. Looks like it was for a photo shoot.
So far it looks exactly like the car we saw at the Shanghai Auto Show a while ago.
Kind of too bad. I wished the US model had a bit more flair. The lights, front and rear, still look a bit cheap. (At least on the pix)
Just like the current one, its competition will be the Acura ILX. As I really don't think anyone will compare this to an Audi A3 or Mercedes CLA.

Here is the Chinese model.
Which seems to be the exact same car.
