2017/18 Audi A5 Sportback

The Sportback is a 4 door hatchback version of the A5 coupe. Kind of what BMW is doing with the 4 series.

Since the A5 is basically a coupe version of the A4 sedan (With a bit more style), the Sportback is pretty much an A4 hatch. The A4 and A5 share the same interior as well.

The whole thing is a bit convoluted, but still better organized than at BMW. Where they have a 4 series which is a 3 series coupe or hatch.
But they also have a 3 series hatchback (The GT).
At least Audi doesn't sell an A4 hatchback...

We never got the previous generation Sportback in the US. But that will change with this upcoming model.

The new A5 is a good looking car. (Even though it is a clone of the previous one)
So things should be the same with the 4 door version.

But it won't be cheap.
Audi will be charging plenty to go from a 4 to a 5.

As a reminder, this is the current A5 Sportback. Based on the previous generation A5 coupe.

2017 Audi A5

Just like any other new Audi (Except maybe the Q2), there are zero surprises here.
And just like the new A4, it is a clone of the previous generation.
Which, in the case of the A5, seems to be OK. Since the current model still looks really good.

I've always really liked the current generation. And its interior.
Unfortunately, the new A5 inherit the sad looking interior of the new A4.
Which is quite a step backward from the previous one.
(Same thing with the new Q7)

I am sure it is a great car. But that flat, uninspired dashboard is quite a let down...

More very soon.

2017 Audi A5

Wow... How sad is this.

An official teaser from Audi, showing a camouflage prototype of the "all new" A5.

And, of course, it looks like the same car as the one we have now.
Just like the A4, it will be a slightly squared off version of the current model.
With the new A4 terrible interior. Which is much worse than it was before.

The current A5 interior is still very, very nice.

I always wonder why car makers use pictures of their camouflaged prototypes as teasers.
Since we have seen much better pictures of that car already...

Audi Q2 on the road.

Looking... cute.

Actually a surprising design for Audi. I think.
As it does have a few original lines here and there.
So maybe the next Q5 won't be as much of a disaster as the Q7?

Too bad (Or too late) for the new A5. Which, on all spy shots, already looks as boring/terrible as the new A4...

2017 Audi Q2

This looks really nice!
Actually surprising from Audi. It doesn't look like a clone of the other ones.
And much, much better than the aging Q3.
So yes, there is hope in the world!

Not sure, but it doesn't look that much shorter than the Q3 either.

And also not sure if we'll see this in the US or not....
But it goes on sale in Europe this fall.

2017 Audi Q2

Here we have what will be Audi's smallest SUV, the new Q2.

"Sportier" and more modern than the Q3, it is based on the newer MQB platform.
So it's basically a Golf.

After seating an a Q3, I'm not sure why they would want to even go smaller.
But, I guess it makes sense in Europe.

Not sure about US sales yet. But I remember a few years ago when they said the Q3 would "never" be sold in the US.
It came here about 3 years later.

Andi e-tron quattro Concept

So this is supposed to be the Tesla Model X fighter we've been hearing about.

But, this is only a concept. And it looks like one.
I really don't think Audi has the guts to actually produce something like this.
It makes the new Q7 looks even crappier than it is already.

The stuff they actually produce is the new "looking 99% like the old one" A4 and the pathetic new Q7. Wich looks like a wagon from the late 80's.
Nothing like this.

The good news is the powertrain. The battery pack allows for a range of over 310 miles.
With a charing time of 50 minutes from a special charging column.
This is getting really good. And better than Tesla.

If the production model actually looked close to this, it would kill the Model X.
The Tesla looks goofy and almost stupid. And the "falcon" doors are a showy gimmick.
Something like this would really steal sales.
And, being an Audi, the interior equality would also be miles ahead of the Tesla.

But.... I really don't think we will see anything close to this concept in the streets anytime soon...

2016 Audi A4: Why???

Yes, why.

Why bother redesigning a car to make it look exactly the same?
Why not just "improve" the current one?
Why ruining the interior?
Why a 1996 design for a 2016 model?

I understand the "classic", "understated" excuses. But understated doesn't mean you copy the same design over and over.
This becomes one of these generic cars you used to see in architectural illustrations.
And the interior is far from understated. With bits, lines, dials everywhere. It's just clumsy.

Why???

(The yellow car is the "all new one")

2016 Audi A4

 OK... This is horrible.

I mean really. This is in NO WAY better looking than the current model.
Of course, it is lighter, more fuel efficient, and has yet another Audi take on "new" headlights.
But this is supposed to be an all new car.
Even BMW does a better job. This is by no mean "ugly ". That's not what I mean.
But an all new car should look maybe at least 5% different than the one it replaces.

There is no excuse for this crap.

But wait, there is worse! Inside.
Look at this.
I mean this is worse than the current interior. By far.
The new Audi interior design theme was previewed by the new (And equally horrible) Q7 interior.

Sure, the plastic must be of high quality. Etc...(As they are now). But look at the flat, uninspired dash. None of that interior looks as good as the current one. And there is either too much metal trim everywhere, or too much wood!
I mean just compare this to the new C Class interior. (!!!)

Audi is slowly but surely, replacing all its models by worse looking designs. (A3 Hatch, Q7, R8 and now A4).
It's is shame.

Audi A8 VS. Cadillac CT6

cadillac ct6 audi a8 new compare profile

First, let me apologize for picking on the CT6 so much. I do liked GM and Cadillac.
But really, I was expecting so much from their "top of the line" model. Especially after all these amazing looking concepts.
Needless to say, I am very disappointed . So there.

I am comparing it to the A8 for 2 reasons. They both have that 3 windows side design.
And, so far, I never really liked the A8. I thought it was always the most boring looking choose in a luxury sedan.
Until now. Until I saw the CT6.
I mean look at both cars. The current A8 came out in 2009 and it looks more modern than the "not even out yet" Cadillac.
The difference will be even greater when the next A8 comes out. (Unless Audi ruins it like they did with the Q7)

But inside, I must say, I do prefer the Cadillac.
It's not a matter of color. ( I couldn't find an official shot with a black interior for the Audi)
But I really hate that big "brush metal strip" Audi is using more and more.
(It is even worse in the new Q7 and upcoming A4) I mean the whole thing almost looks like a mess.

So basically, I'd rather be inside the CT6.
(Maybe you could keep your eyes closed until you get inside your car ?)

It will also depend on price.
If the same crazy guys who decided the ELR is worth $75 000 are in charge of pricing the CT6, they are in trouble.
The slow selling CTS starts at about $40 000 (After a price drop their new CEO said would never happen)
So this could maybe start at $50 000. Or $55 000 at the most.
If they think they can demand the same $74 000 as the Audi A8, all I can say is: Good luck...
