2023 Mazda CX-9: early look…

Last Updated:

The Mazda CX-9 is one of many redesigned Mazda models coming out soon. Just like the new CX-50 (CX-5 replacement) and the new Mazda 6 sedan, the new CX-9 (which could become the CX-90 or CX-80) will be based on the all-new RWD platform. And will get the new inline 6 cylinder engine as well.

The new 6 will be available worldwide as a 3.0 Liter, or 3.3 Liter Diesel. Obviously, the Diesel will not be coming to the US. And by late next year, I am not sure it’ll be welcome anywhere…

Base versions could still use the current 2.5 Liter Turbo, with the new 6 being an option. Apparently, a plug-in hybrid could also be in the works.

Starting late next year, we will be seeing these new Mazdas coming out. The new CX-50 could be the first one. With the Mazda 6 and CX-9 replacement next.  Mazda will move all their new models upmarket. So this new 3 row SUV could actually be competing with the new Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60. As well as the less expensive  Kia Telluride, Chevy Traverse or Explorer crowd.

  1. While Mazda is my favorite auto manufacturer, I truly hope they know what they are doing as far as this move upmarket goes, and don't end up pricing themselves into bankruptcy. Unfortunately, they're not the greatest selling auto manufacturer now. I don't see this changing anytime soon. Marketing has improved over the years, but even that needs to be increased 10 fold if this is going to be a success.

  2. That definitely appears to be a mock-up/model/photoshop of the current generation. The front end is basically identical, just with slimmer/non-existent headlights.

  3. My only wish for this vehicle moving forward is that Mazda offer it with an optional third row delete.

  4. I own the current CX-9, and IMHO I think Mazda is VERY capable of taking it to the next level. Their real problem is their MARKETING!!!! For I stance, the Mazda 6 is easily the most dynamic a fresh family sedan available, yet it sells so poorly that there is talk of discontinuing it. This is inexcusable.

Of Mazda fixes their marketing problem, they will be a serious force to be reckoned with.

For the non Mazda owners who may be reading this, I understand that you may doubt this. I would ask you to go test drive a Mazda 6, a Toyota Camry and a Honda Accord back to back and then decide. Mazda suspension is LEAPS AND BOUNDS superior to ANYTHING in its respective class. Anything g less than a BMW simply can't touch it.
