“All Diesel” for the new Mazda BT-50 Pick up truck

Last Updated:

It is based on the new Ford Ranger, but has it’s own design and interior.

And it will be available with a choice of 2 engines. Both Diesels.

The smaller one is a 2.2 Liter unit with 110hp. Replacing the current less powerful 2.5 Liter.
The big news seems to be the all new 3.2 Liter 5 cylinder with 147hp. Replacing a 3.0 Liter unit.

But, just like the new Ranger, the BT-50 will not be sold in the US.

It is for overseas where it will compete with the all new Colorado from GM, as well as the VW Amarok.

And, yes, the new Ranger…

I really think there could be a market in the US for an efficient Diesel only compact truck. It doesn’t look that small, and torque is abundant.
It might not be for everyone, but it doesn’t need to be.

Most Mazdas aren’t anyway…

  1. I don't know why Mazda would bother with a pickup here at all. No one thinks of their Mazda dealer when they want a truck.

  2. This is the new Ford Ranger.
They are both built in a Mazda factory in Thailand. Ford has their own front end among a few differences.
But in reality the Ford is built by Mazda.
Rebadging? You could say that but there are a few differences that seperate them. But not much.
    Same engine, etc.

  3. Vince you mean 110kW/150hp and 147kW/200hp. The new BT-50 and Ranger twins are very well looked forward to here in Aus. The ute class is picking up the game, especially as the Amarok has proven. Great to see!

  4. Ford's excuse for not selling a "New Ranger" is that if priced comparative to the F150, most people will get the F150.
Mazda does not have that dilema. They should sell this in the U.S. much like they sell the Mazda 5 mini-mini van. A diesel with exceptional milage and loads of torque priced at $17k to $21k it will sell.

The Hilux is the biggest selling commercial around the world bar the US (where it isnt sold).
And they will still continue to be.
    Whew!

  6. dumb design. On the other hand, if you're going after toyota; if gives customers a choice between dumb & dumber.

  7. "March 31, 2011 5:18 AM" is spot on.. if Ford continues to refuse to sell a modern Ranger here, why shouldn't Mazda bring it over as a premium Diesel offering?
