2011 Honda Fit Hybrid

Last Updated:

So far, not for us either.
This will be unveiled in Paris next month.

It uses the same engine as the CR-Z. Which means it cannot run on electric power alone.

If Honda really want to be serious with hybrids, they need to understand one thing:
people want great mileage out of them.

The Toyota and Ford systems are vastly superior.
The CR-Z averages less than 40mpg. Which isn’t much more than the regular Fit.

So will see if consumers are willing to pay thousands for the small improvement.
Seeing Honda Hybrid sale numbers plummeting in the past few years, my guess is no….

  1. I like the Fit, and it annoys me that we're not getting the hybrid model. It annoys me because Europe and Japan seem to get the best and most interesting cars.

But I agree about the Honda hybrid system, I drove it in the Civic hybrid and didn't like it at all – though that may be because it has an inferior CVT transmission.

What the Fit really needs to make it a "must have" and best value in the segment would be a 6-speed auto transmission, more sound insulation, and 4-wheel disc brakes. Make it a slightly more efficient, safer and more comfortable car.

  2. Unless the mileage for Honda hybrids improves, it's not very "green" to build a car with hundreds of pounds of batteries and a second powertrain.

  3. Vince, you might misread the press report since it's same engine as Insight and the leaked Japanese Fit Hybrid brochure shows 30km/l which is same as Insight mileage.

It's $3000 cheaper than Insight so I could see it selling in the US though I think US really needs a midsize full hybrid which will take Honda another 2 years.

  4. Mileage is the least of Honda's problems. The Civic is notorious for going through tires prematurely; and Civic Hybrids are notorious for their enless array of "glitches". My friend recently won almost $10k in his lawsuit against Honda for all the time spend taking the car in for repairs. And another friend with a gas Civic says that his car also has been one of the most problamatic vehicles he's ever had. "What little I save on gas mileage is more than offset by having to replace tires every 30,000 miles. (For comparison: I'm only on the 3rd set of tires on my Dodge–which is pushing 200k miles!) I don't think Honda is building the kind of quality they did 15 years ago.

  5. Totally agree with LIMatt. They're treating the Fit like a stripper. Its a great looking car, but they've kind of missed the point. It's never going to be the cheapest car in the segment. So go for the most desirable. Upgrade the interior a bit, at least upgrade the Sport to be a better drive than it is now. 6AT!!! Moonroof ! 4wheel discs. Maybe its possible to get some rear discs from the CRZ to trade. American Honda really needs some new blood.

  6. Honda does have the best overall gas mileage of any car maker in America. I guess Honda doesn't pay Vince enough to ever say anything nice about them. Hyundai must be paying a pretty penny.

  7. Honda is just out of sync on every front. Im afraid of what they are doing to the new Civic. It will literally be the last straw for this Honda fan.

  8. Honda should work to carve out it's own niche in the market for uber fuel efficient cars. If Honda focused their efforts on selling diesel cars in North America they could distinguish themselves from Toyota and Ford.

  9. who cares, the Nissan Leaf is 100% electric and has ZERO emmissions, this dud is ancient history before it lands.

If you are okay with being leashed to a maximum 50 mile range from your home, then buy a Leaf. Just don't use your headlamps, radio, brakes or windshield wipers, or you'll be stranded! What a dumb vehicle.

As for the Honda FIT, it's slightly less toy-like than the Leaf.

  11. Suzuki Swift — oh when are you coming to the USA? Good looking, fun to drive, same packaging as the FIT, for a great price. I would buy a FIT hybrid if it had amazing MPG and every feature you can get in a Prius without breaking the bank.

  12. The CR-Z's mileage numbers are based on it being run in Sport mode so it should see much higher numbers when running in Normal or Econ modes.

I drove a manual one this weekend and much more impressed than I thought I would be from what I had read in the initial articles that I have seen. It also looks much better in person than in pictures.
