  1. I hear the Volt will cost well over $40k, but isn’t Toyota’s 2010 Prius going to get 80 mpg and be under $25k?

  2. Vince,

You should add won’t look like concept to that list.

GM looking/may get a $10k credit from Government.

  3. Let’s say your commute is 15 miles, one way. With that “smaller gas tank” how many gallons of gas have you used?

NONE. It goes 40 miles on a single charge.

Hell, let’s say your commute is 40 miles one way. You drive to work, you’ve used no gas. You plug it in at work and it’s ready for the commute home hours before you leave. Again, how many gallons of gas have you used? NONE. 80 miles, NO gasoline used.

People really don’t understand how a series hybrid works and its a shame that a concept so simple is apparently so difficult to grasp.

By making the tank smaller, they’ve shed a little bit of weight and helped reduce the possibility of your tank of gas going bad due to not actually using it.

The range will be fine, and once you do need to fill up, it won’t be as much of a pain as filling a traditional tank with 13-18 gallons or so. It’ll only be 8 or 9.

  4. Automotive news reported while ago:
    – price would be around 40K and GM was looking for gov subsidy to get closer to 30K
    – Available around Nov 2009

I also wonder how it can compete with a much cheaper plug-in Prius.

  5. Bring this car on. I can’t wait. I’m tired of being screwed by oil companies.

Range isn’t as much an issue IMO; for most of the population you can drive on charge only for the day. If you need the gas – it still delivers pretty typical range to traditional gas engines.

Plus – if it’s close in appearance to the concept – it’s a hot looking ride.

    Vince – how was Europe?

  6. Too much hype for this thing. What GM needs NOW–THIS MINUTE–is a good small car like the Honda FIT or Toyota Yaris.

The Chevy Aveo is said to be a POS, so GM must offer something much better than that, and PRONTO.

The Volt is too far away, too expensive, and the technology is likely to be disappointing initially.

  7. Rushing to release it may not be good. Could be alot of comebacks with problems.
Something like this would need major testing.

  8. the ingenuity of the volt will be if lutz can actually get this thing to production with interchangeable propulsion, allowing consumers to finance the development of battery technology… if he succeeds, he’ll be this century’s henry ford; if his team cannot achieve this, and the vehicle is rushed to production, it will be his downfall.

In either case, Lutz’s legacy rides on this project.

  9. I don’t care if this thing runs on water, I wil not touch a POS American brand name. GM/Ford,etc made their own bed by making crappy vehicles that are worth nothing.
Buy American, but a Honda or Toyotas built in the good old USA using american workers.
Sorry Vince but do I need to say more?
I am waiting on the new Honda Hybrids, any info Vince?

  10. Only a stupid American would turn down a car that runs on water just because it was an American car.

Do I need to say more?

  11. Bring it out already. Did I hear Nov 09? That freaking almost calendar year 2010 and not model year 2010! By then Toyota probably will release one too at a lower price and more reliable. Why are they sitting on their arses? Waiting for 99 cents gas again so they can dust off those 2008-2009 SUVs and re-release to the public as commemorative models?

  12. It’s not done. What makes you think they’re “sitting on their arses”? They’re working against a hard deadline and testing and doing all they can to get the car out.

This is negative commenting with no purpose other than to grind an axe 101. They can’t win no matter what they do. They’re damned if they bring it out early because then you’ll rip them for putting out a decontented and/or unreliable vehicle. I can see it now, “There goes GM again, over-promising and under-delivering!”

They bring it out when its planned, and you still get to say “Toyota will have model X out that is cheaper and more reliable!”

Seriously, Vince you need to clean up the tripe around here. Seeing this incessant domestic bashing over and over again in the face of rising reliability (didn’t they ask for better cars?) is getting tiresome.

  13. I would love to see an internal documentary released showing how this car came to fruition within GM. It could be released after the first lifecycle of the first generation. That way no hard technology data could be pulled from the video that would help a competitor. You have to wonder what effort it took to get the energy and committment behind this concept.

With all due respect I would dissagree with you Sr. Do you know how much money I lost thru the years by buying a Monte Carlo, three Tauruses, Dodge Intrepid, Ford Explorer, Malibu, etc. I was trying to do the right thing buy buying American cars but those companies knew that Americans will replace cars every three to four years so they kew they had a free cow (money coming in). They never cared about me or my family by making a reliable or safe car. All those years (80’/90′) they had a chance to built a better car that those Japanese vehicles. I wasted so much money in those cars, that I got in debt.
Wasn’t till 2003 when I first purchased my firs Honda Accord. Sir, I will tell you that I am amazed by their quality.

So GM or other Americam brand name companies expect simpathy from me, now that they are in the hall?
What about me and my family? where do I get the simpathy from?
I am glad that some American brand names are a little better but IMO still garbage.
Sir, I am proof that Americans got screw thru the years.
American brand name cars are built in Mexico and they even use parts built in China, the best part is that they priced their vehicles as if ther were built here.

Sorry about the long comment but I think lots of Americans feel this way. What is the number one vehicle selling today? Honda Civic, not the cobalt or Focus.

Sorry but I hope GM, Ford, Dodge go outta business.

As far as Vince, I think he does a great job by allowing educated comsumers to place their opinion.

Thanks Vince and keep up the good work.

By the way, I am drivind an 08′ Honda and a 97′ Acura. The Acura currently with 157K miles and no signs of any thing leaking in the engine. I should take a picture of it. Reliable Acura/Honda is what I paid.
