BMW 1 series coupe

Last Updated:

We’ll know more soon.
Official pictures and all the info will be available on July 1st.
I think it could be a great car.
It might even hurt the 3 series coupe. It doesn’t seem that much smaller. And in the US, it’ll also get the same engine.

  1. A V-6 sounds nice, but I think a nice 4 would have been better, but I am not sure if that would cannibalize Mini sales.
What will be the savings in price to have one of these over the 3 series? $5k?
Maybe BMW should bring over a healthy 4 inline.

  2. Why the thick, black “mascara” line under the headlights? It’s purposeless. And that character line from front to back looks like its bones are poking through its skin. What next, tailfins? I’ll never appreciate Bangle’s work. He’s ruined BMW design.

  3. I think that BMW are missing a trick by not calling this the 2002.
Having said that, I still don’t like it..

  4. I can’t wait to drive it! I agree that the price will probably only be around $5k under the 3 series (hopefully 5k under the sedan, not the coupe :-), and I agree that Bangle should be blinded at once, but it’s the only small, quick, RWD game in town with any kind of back seat and trunk. If Mazda would build their 3 w/RWD, I’d have one in my driveway already. And you can expect @30mpg highway in this car even with the 6 cylinder engines, and more performance than the 3 series as well since the 1 series should give up a couple hundred lbs (at least) over the 3’s.
As for the “2002” monniker… since I’m older and remember the 2002’s and 1600’s when they came out, it would work for me, but I dunno if it would be meaningful to younger potential buyers.

  5. I drove a 5 door when I was in Europe for Christmas this past December. Seemed well made & I like the interior, but absolutely no backseat leg room. For the $ I would rather have a 325i coupe instead of this.

You are not actually serious, are you? You know this is tape to hide features of the car. You must be either stupid or know nothing about cars.

    I am.

You got me. I’m both stupid and know nothing about cars, but it still doesn’t look like tape to me.

I’m not sure about your comments. The tape is probably there to disguise some design element.

But for me and especially for BMW Bangle has done great work. BMW has had great sales Figures. So you may not like his work but the marketplace sure loves him.

  9. If the “mascara” around the lights is tape, I really hope that it is not hiding any kind of “radar” or night vision device, or active cruise control sensors. All things that will raise the price. If it is hiding “chrome” accents it will also be something I would not want on this car.
Leave the technology and “style” for the bigger BMWs.

    Yes, but goes without saying.

Yeah, you’re right. That wasn’t disputed.

I’m with you. I miss the 2002 model’s purist design where it was all about the driving and not the toys. Early and mid-life 3-series were similar. The formula worked for the Miata and still does. Maybe this car will offer simple/pure driving pleasure.

Perhaps Bangle’s side designs were inspired by this:

Thank you for your reply. You seem to have understood my point better than some others. According to every spy shot of the 1-series I’ve seen, there was no design element to disguise, hence my comments about the silly treatment on the headlights. And the black tape on the front bumper is equally as absurd for the same reason, even though it wasn’t as carefully sculpted as it is on the headlights. Now we can just expect to read that the black line on the bumper is actually a rub strip.

But I’m stupid and know nothing about cars. 😉
