Look at the amazing difference between these 2 videos.
The 1st one is a crash test for the 2001 Ford Escape.
We can all agree it is pretty scary.
The 2nd one shows a similar test for the 2005 Escape.
With much better results.
As far as I know, the Escape didn’t change much from 2001 to 2005, yet Ford has found a way to make the car much safer.
So the current, revised 2008 model should do even much better.
Great news most of us couldn’t find out from a car salesman.
And good stuff to know if you’re looking for a used Escape…
Second video will probably leave you with a good concussion or even brain injury when ur head hits the b post on rebound. It needs side head airbags.
Ford did “redesign” the Escape for 2005, though you could hardly tell visually. Obviously the improvements were under the skin. The 2008’s have the same structure underneath, but totally new sheetmetal and interior, as well as a bunch of new features -namely standard side curtain airbags and stability control, so it should be safer still…
I really liked this site…until you made that car salesman remark. Be careful not to judge all by the actions of a few.
Most car salesmen dont know there ass from a hole in the ground ! im always educating THEM about there new/future/current products when i visit showrooms ! At the last LA auto show i overheard a lincoln salesmen telling a customer the MKZ is based off the ford escape and the customer said well i could just buy a escape and save lots of money, and the salesmen said why yes you could.. lol
I was a car salesman for awhile. I think Vince has it right. Most salesmen don’t have a clue.
Yea, an improvement from being dead to being just brain dead. Whoever buys an Escape or Mariner or Tribute is stupid. The obvious choice is either the Honda CR-V or RAV4 or (I can’t believe I’m saying this) the Santa Fe.

were those even the same test? one looks like a full frontal impact test but the bottom one looks like some sort of front offset impact test because the car hits a small block towards one side of the car and not an entire wall.
although i wouldnt go as far as to make an ignorant comment like douchebag jones, i have to agree with everyone else here reagrding car salesmen.
i have purchased 3 brand new vehicles and have yet to encounter a knowledgeable salesperson, let alone a courteous one. i think due to commissions etc, salesmen are much more concerned with getting your money than whether or not the vehicle you are looking at suits your needs, budget etc.
Good god, some people here are so simple. Good for Ford for recognizing their SUV didn’t perform good enough and then fixing it. What does any of this have to do with a discussion about salespeople? It means that I’m part of the 80% here who are actual enthusiast… someone who appreciates automotive engineering regardless of which continent the vehicle originates or what logo is on the trunk. However, 20% of the people here are hell-bent on exhibiting a pack mentality. Maybe these particular people are eighteen, or maybe they don’t get out much. The snotty salesman comments were just a red herring for what should have been a discussion about an automaker’s obvious commitment to improving their crash test results.
I love this site. But the “community” here is something I tend to avoid.
Begs the question, why are people so cheap (and stupid) and don’t order ANY vehicle with side protection. The data is in, it helps protect you!
