New Scion xB replacement

Last Updated:

New name (tB?), 2.4 Liter and 170hp.

This looks to be just an illustration, but a close one.

  1. It’s the same damn thing as the current Xb… just with a little sandpaper to round-out the edges a bit. Like a shoebox with worn-out corners.

Who chose this conservative green? This color hasn’t been in style since 1991. Well, I suppose it is primarily the geriatric crowd that finds this car appealing.

    Not a good effort: C-

  2. Most cars are anthropomorphic, but this on definitely has the face of a bullfrog. I like it.

I’m glad the designers didn’t depart too far from the xB box shape. Too much rounding would make it much less useful as wagon.

  3. Toyota’s latest innovation: Huge blind spots on the C-pillar. The new FJ Cruiser has them, the new Tundra has them, and the new Scion xB will have them. WTF were they thinking?

  4. I hear it will be about a foot longer than the current xB which will make it a much better cargo hauler. Hear its about 3 inches wider too.

  5. i think that’s the appeal of the box design – it’s different. i guess it’s the antithesis of the beetle – you wouldn’t make the beetle a box.

but overall, i’d have to agree that this illustration doesn’t look that great. i like the thick d-pillar for looks but it would give such a terrible, terrible blind spot. the front end looks like a droopy dog face in all the worst ways.

hopefully the actual car will look better.

  6. It’s a great idea to have such a boxy car…

This new design is so-so but it’s still better than the car it replaces.

The new large engine is getting us a bit too far from the original concept but Toyota probably put a lot of efforts in making it fuel efficient.

Scion is still not available in Canada…

  7. I really do hope the car hasn’t grown. its size was the biggest appeal otherwise it is just another cuv in a sea of wanna-be-suvs.

  8. I like it, spouse won’t, which means I most likely won’t see it in our driveway in 2009,when I go to buy the next new car.

The 170HP is from the 05-06 Corolla “sporty” version.
If it is anything like the tC’s 160HP engine, it will be fast, adn fuel efficient. We get 32-34MPH(w/automatic) in 65% hwy, 35% city traffic.
The local deaelrship told me the new xA and xB replacements are due by late Spring and early Summer.
Another guy said end of March(that is Spring)… so….
    I like the weird look.
Maybe if this thing goes 0-60 like our tC(around 8 seconds) and handles ok,, maybe I can egt the spouse for a test drive, and she will like it? lol(here’s hoping!).

Oh, about the size. I heard it would increase by 10 inches in length(a foot would be even better, and about 1-2 inches short of the PT Cruiser)and 4 inches wider.
So, that is around 165-167 inches in total length up from 155 inches or so currently.
HP up from 108 to 170? WOW!
Even to 160 would be great.
Maybe they want to get some conquest saels from Dodge/Chrysler and GM(PT and HHR and Caliber?).

  9. “hey, what’s up with all the hate? You UAW workers or something?”

LOL! There are plenty of white collar workers who wouldn’t be caught dead in a Toyota. If I were in the market for an entry lux car, I’d consider a Lexus IS maybe if the new CTS-V, A4 or 3 series didn’t exist. A nasty toybox on wheels like this would never be a consideration.

  10. why does every newly redesigned vehicle get bigger? in 10 years, the mini will be the size of a suburban!

    say ‘no’ to supersizing !!!

  11. It’s the same damn thing as the current Xb… just with a little sandpaper to round-out the edges a bit. Like a shoebox with worn-out corners.

Do you think they should’ve made it squarer? What would you have done differently?

Who chose this conservative green? This color hasn’t been in style since 1991. Well, I suppose it is primarily the geriatric crowd that finds this car appealing.

Then what’s your problem with Toyota’s choice of color if they (according to you) are meeting market demands?

  12. tc @ 2:14 PM: I have gotten way more than 34 MPH in a tC before. I think it’s limited just south of 130 MPH.

  13. The illustrated pic above is close to new replacement based on the t2B concept, but a tad smaller. Although SCION did reveald the actuall concept model in Miami, the model was equiped with aftermarket product including the body kit from Axis and of course, no cell phones/camereas were allowed during the event.

    This however I do know…
Its 12 to 13 inches longer, 3 inch wider, and its not that big as the t2B concept.

The interior however is close to the JDM bB interior except with the location of the shifter wich is mounted on the center colum much like the Toyots Matrix.

  14. The new one is already out in Japan for over a year. Just need the check the Toyota.jp website, you can see the new design (“bB”). The real problem is that Toyota seems to be unsure about the size and the performance of Scion future products. If the lineup is too upmarket with size and performance, it will be out of reach of most teenagers. If they stay with mini-car, Scion can loose its “coolest” with the reputation of selling underpower and undersize cheap car.

  15. GOOD LUCK to those of you who buy and drive this thing anywhere there is snow!!!! Ground clearance is so low and the vehicle is so light in weight that it is very easy to get stuck and hung up in only 4 inches of snow! It has already happened 3 times this winter and the tow truck companies I have talked to said it is one of the most frequently stranded vehicles they rescue in the winter months!!!

I believe that toyota is rumored to be addressing this problem by offering an 4wd option in the next xb. JDM models had that option, but not US models. 08 model will have 4wd option.

  17. It looks like a Model A Ford with new door handles from the A-pillar back… what a hiddeous little piece of machinery.

  18. The Frog is the license plate I’d have for this!
134HP? That is less than a Caliber, with 142HP.

AWD? Well, if Suzuki can sell the SX4 with automatic, and AWD/FWD capabilities, for 15-17K, (and 143HP) I don’t see why Scion cant sell the xB at same prices with AWD.

  19. I wish I had some extra cash, I’d then buy the current xB for future beater car.

I won’t buy any new Scion since they’ll be manufactured in the USA. Sorry, but no more Toyota USA for me. I’ll only take 100% genuine Made in Japan & Assembled in Japan Toyota.

I had the xB for one day and was very impressed with its space & comfort (especially the best of any car, entry/exit of the car)

  20. all Scions will continue to be made in Japan. while they won’t necessarily be JDM products, Scion owners can relish in the fact that they are assembled there.

  21. I wonder if they will have options such as Sunroof/Moonroof, adjustable seats( 6 or 8 way adjustment), to name a few.

Most of us, even those of us in the South, manage just fine in 6-10 inches of snow with our front wheel drive cars.

What sort of hellish winter weather are you so worried about? Denver 2007?

Sheesh. I guess we should all trade in our cars for snow mobiles tomorrow.

    Whatever.

  23. Am I the only one that thinks Scion tB = Scion Tuberculosis? 😛

All kidding aside… There are a lot more curves to this car than in the last iteration. I was never a fan of the xB design, though, and if this illustration is accurate I probably won’t like it either.. If I had to choose between the xA and xB I would go for the xA, but YMMV.

  24. I am a worried toyota driver, I currently drive a scion and it’s been pretty good. But it’s not near as good as my previous ones. This concept looks neat, but I’m not sure if I will buy another. Any advice?

  25. Not nearly as good as the previous one.
    What do you mean?
Did you switch model or do you have more problems ?

  26. 170 hp in the new box eh….

    “The 2007 Toyota RAV4 produces 166 hp (123 kW) at 6000 RPM and 165 ft·lbf of torque at 4000 RPM [1].”

as a current xb owner, if this new box is more like a slammed rav4, i’m trading in.

  27. The US is not getting the new JDM bB. Let me repeat: WE ARE NOT GETTING THE NEW JDM bB. The 08 xB is an all new design specifically for the US market. Just because the last xB was ported over doesn’t mean that all future models will be the same. More details can be found at Rant.
