Another new Corolla

Last Updated:

Not sure exactly wich one this is.
it is described as the bew “European Corolla”.
I thought the Corolla was replaced by the Auris in Europe…
I guess they might still use the Corolla name for the “trunk version”.
This is one confusing car company.

Anyway, this looks to me like what we’ll soon know as teh “US Corolla”…

  1. This Corolla’s interior is very classy for its market segment. The exterior is utterly disappointing.

  2. Wow. Why did they even need to redesign this thing after seeing the new Civic? I can’t imagine how it could look any more boring than it does in these photos.

  3. Looks like the most plausible american corolla. Exterior shows ties to Lexus IS and Camry, but noth far from last gen corolla that is already long in the tooth.

C minus. Bad on you Toyota.

  4. Nothing special. Disappointing actually, considering how competitive this segment has become. The ancient Focus looks like a fresher design (from the exterior.) The Astra appears to be much more appealing option once it comes stateside as a Saturn. With all the other good choices, I don’t really know why anyone would buy a Corolla.

  5. Strongly resembles other toyotas, which is not a compliment, and also looks alot like the original Kia Sephia in Canada

  6. It looks like a “US design” Vince.
I cant see Yoda changing the exterior too much for the US model. Imagine an identical design for both European and US markets… Outrageous that the US would get the same design of those little-minded-Socialist, “old-world” Europeans..LOL.

I could see Yoda changing the interior instrumentation design a bit for US consumer tastes.

  7. Looks better than the Japanese version. It must be quieter than the Civic. The new 1.8 engine is more powerful than the current model. If the milage is the same or better than the current one, I will buy it.

  8. Ok.
    1) what is the difference between say the Focus/Astra and Corolla? Well, Corolla is More Reliable? Better MPG? One of the cheapest cars to own and operate?

    Sounds about right.

If I were a betting man, I’d bet Toyota outlasts either.

    2) The interior:
Looks cool(like the door handle…I “splay” my legs alot…and hit the door handles, witht hsi thing< I wouldn't really).
The color/dash set up remind sme a lot of the newer Kia Spectra.

    3) The exterior: It sure isn’t a Lancer(Vince…. next Monday, the 11th, I read on edmunds, the lancer pix will be released for public…you gotta get some!).

    4) Sentra/SE-R…. This looks better. Sentra is dull(looks old) in photos already.

Hoping they have some 0-60 times in under a week, lol…
Hoping closer to 9 seconds, vs 10-11.

If the price is right, as per usual, they’ll sell 300-400,000 per year.

  9. Same droopy front end, same droopy back end, same dull Camry-esque looks, same cheap looking plastimetal interior trim. Yeah, it’s the new – yaaaaaaaaawn – Corolla. Or maybe it shouold be called Bore-olla.

  10. I think some one missed the memo….”Do over quickly, the civic design is killing us. Not even our Scion stand a chance.”

I guess just like our President, they all do what ever they please. Regardless what people are saying.

  11. Which European country drive at the “wrong” side of the road, like us?

I think this is it, it’s the US version – it sure looks boring, looks very similar to the current Corolla 🙁

I hope Toyota made all the important changes inside (new 1.8l dual VVT-i engine, more refined suspension, better interior insulation & amenities, etc)

  12. “Not sure exactly wich one this is.

Auris is the name for the hatchback. The sedan will still be called Corolla. And yes; this is the European version. The current Corolla looks also slightly different from the Japanese Corolla sedan.

  13. Clearly I’ve had a different experience with Corollas than JD Power has. A rental car with only 700 miles broke down on me in 1997, which pretty much made me hate Toyota forever and reject the reputation of quality they’ve developed. Besides that experience, a friend’s new Corolla sounded like it had a bad ground though the whirring sounds the speakers. They’re loud, they rattle, they’re slow, they’re unsafe, they’re uncomfortable and they’re geeky. And they’re not exactly a bargain. Yet this person said that this car’s quirks were cute and gave it “character.” Bleh! I see many more 90s Cavaliers on the road than I do Corollas… not that I would want one of those either. I am not convinced Corollas are good cars, people who buy them just have lower expectations.

  14. “Which European country drive at the “wrong” side of the road, like us?”

There is a well traveled man (or woman…)

Pretty much every country in Europe drives on the same side of the road as in the US.
    Except England. (and Ireland?)

  15. What’s funny is that I remember reading a few months ago that the original design for the new corolla was thrown out because the styling of the new civic apparently made that design look boring and tired…..so Toyota went back to the drawing board.

…But this design also looks boring and tired….so how bad must that other design have been?

    Makes you wonder, don’t it?

  16. that looks like our current model with a face and rear lift, and a new interior….no complaint that this car isnt any different comeon…pretty boring, and no real change….did they use all the money on the tundra, and camry

  17. The car itself is really nice. But compare to the old one it quite similar. So, don’t think that you’ve ever seen it 🙂

  18. “Honey, I shrunk the Camry.” A poor man’s Camry. From the front-end down to the interior air vents, it looks like a shrunk Camry. It might work on some, but not enough to kick the Civic’s ass.

  19. Yes, this is the Euro Corolla sedan, which is almost identical to the Chinese/ASEAN/Taiwan market Corolla.

The Auris is supposed to appeal to younger buyers, and be sportier than this Corolla sedan. That’s why the name change occured.

And I don’t know what people are saying, but what I do know is that people are buying Corollas more than ever. Sales keep increasing even with the old dated model, and with the new Civic being in the market for a while now.

  20. “There is a well traveled man (or woman…)”

    Thanks, I didn’t know that!
I learned something new today. 🙂

  21. the current corolla does 0-60 in 7.9 seconds

    thats not too slow
it was recently tested on motortrend or some magazine on a comparison test

  22. El Guapo here.

Hey Vince, I think the outside is OK, I can deal with it and so its engine. I am a family man and the size look nice, not too small.
The one thing I can’t stand had kept me from buying Toyotas instead of Hondas is, the fugly interior. Really cheap and ugly. That is my opinion. Camry and Rav4 are nice but the interior…oh boy. I got an Accord and a CRV instead (07’s)
Also, I hope they trow in the Curtain Air Bags standard instead of what Toyota is well know to do, charge you extra for safety.

    Just my opinion.

I hate to be a disbeliever here, but…….
thsi sounds suspiciously like many posters(UAW) comments I read on detnews.com/auto talk forum, every day.
I had …..(fill in the blank) and it blew up twice, while sitting in the driveway, with no key in the car.
Whatever. Yeah… Either you’re the unluckiest human being on Earth, and got one of the few bad Corollas, or this is fabrication of a story. I tend to believe the latter in this instance. Sorry.

  24. What are you guys talking about here. The new Corolla look great inside/out. Unlike most of you commentors here,I cann’t wait for this new Corolla to come out and be part of our family. I had an new 05 corolla 5-spds stick bought for $11K plus tax and fees and I was doing 100 miles round trip everyday commuting between LA and Orange County. I was getting close to 40 miles/gallon and the steering and powertrain was smooth. As far as the redesign, I personally was hoping for a little more power from the same engine dispacement with comparable MPG and a little room as well as an upgraded interior and exterior. Toyota must have read my mind. I am currently leasing a 05 Nissan Altima (24 MPG)and I can tell you that is is not as smooth and quiet as that Corolla Stick (possibly due to Nissan’s Timing Chain Engine design. Toyota understand their compact car buyers well and that’s why they are very successful
in the USA. As far as the Toyota haters are concerned, you guys need to face reality that Toyota build better cars/trucks than those so called domestic vehicles. I am also hoping the big Three can put better products out there for the consumers and that our goverment doesn’t have to use our money to bail them out soon.

  25. The saturn Astra after one year in America will probably be more reliable than a corolla. Toyotas going down the hole with their quality. Gm has their act togther. Toyota has a name that their making a profit off of.

You should write fiction!” And the Cobalt’s form GM overtook the world, even making :exus look bad” LOL!
Maybe comedy is more your forte’?

  27. Vince, sorry about the last post(hope i did not offend anyone…. abut duh GM karz Kommentz).

Just get tired of people who are so hate filled, come on here and ATTACK, EVERY TIME. Like when you posted stuff about Chinese cars, and YOU were bashed for it, etc, and you said something like’ You don;t like it, leave the site”, basically.
I see good and bad in all vehicles. None Uff Dem iz parfact!
    😉
Too bad most people are so closed minded they can’t see.
makes em sound like backwood farmers who live in caves, or someting. living with their eyes closed.
Large mouthed people with narrow minds,.
GM does ok, I just felt liek thrwoing some stuff up in their faces for once, like “back at ya”..how ya liek it?
and yes, Vince did post a photo of a coblat, and the trunk looked popped open, BUT IT WAS CLOSED!
    Get over it.

  28. Hey, obviously none of you have driven the new sentra. once you do, with a peppy engine and a cvt unmatched for smoothness, you will all view honda and toy products as behind in technology. if toy or hon had such a high tech, solid car, that’s all you would talk about. stop being sheep and make decisions on your own merits.Nissan simply builds a better car. i do sell them for a living so I am prjudice, but , I did also sell toyotas previuosly

  29. Insider:

You mean the Sentra that couldn’t even beat the 5 year old Corolla design in the most recent comparison test of econo-cars for $18k? THAT SENTRA? Lol. It drives like a Buick; not exactly a fun car that Honda and Toyota should be afraid of. It couldn’t match the acceleration OR the economy of the Civic or even the Corolla which debuted in late 2002! 36 MPG isn’t exactly groundbreaking highway mileage when the old Corolla has been outrunning this Sentra with 41 MPG for years.

The words that sum up the Sentra seem to be “mini-Town Car.” Roomy, but slow, thirsty, and soft compared to the Civic, or Corolla.

  30. “Too bad most people are so closed minded they can’t see.

    Very insightful. Are you twelve?

  31. Here in Europe the name Corolla will remain in the sedan, stationwagon and MPV versions. Auris will only replace the Corolla Hatchback.

  32. “Anonymous said…

Dumb ass, only The U.K., Australia, Hong Kong, and a select few other countries drive on the Left. The majority is right hand drive.
