All new 2012 BMW 1 series hatchback

Last Updated:

The hatchback version of the 1 series is being redesigned for the 2012 model year.
And I must say it does look quite good. A very nice evolution of the current model.
That means the coupe and convertible versions, sold over here, will follow about a year later.

This is the current 1 series. So you can see the difference.
I usually am not crazy of evolutionary designs, but I think this one works. The new car looks sportier and more upscale as well.

  1. Interestingly enough, I it's the first BMW in awhile that didn't make me want to throw up from the initial view! A lot of people don't like the looks of this, but I don't think it's bad at all!

  2. I am a huge fan of evolutionary design, and I believe they did a great job. I don't know if it's exactly what I would have chosen to do but none the less I really like it. The front has a bit of the shark look and the tail lights in rear, though simple look great. The interior is also a huge improvement. Way better then the Mercedes hatch

  3. The classic and much beloved BMW designs are all long gone now.

    This is absolutely ghastly!

    What is BMW thinking??

  4. This thing always looked dumpy as a hatchback and the new one still does. As a coupe and convertible it was somehow transformed in a much better-looking car. I imagine the same will transpire here.

  5. I thought BMW was planning the next1-series hatches to be FWD? Or is this just a heavy facelift of the current model? To me, it looks wildly out of proportion.. way too wide to be a 1-series, and that 7-series grille needs to go.

  7. Really don't understand the philosophy here. It has the the cramped interior, lack of luggage space, and cheap-@$$ ugliness of an econo-box; but probably the poor mileage and high price/bad value of a BMW–but without the M3's performance. What's the point??? Can there be that big of a market for a product that appeals only to folks that are blind, stupid, self-depricating, AND really bad at handling money???

  8. I like it. The headlights and unique front end design help mask the mandatory pedestrian safety standards that are plaguing the front end aesthetics of cars these days. The side is bold, while the rear is conservative, but still nice. I'm curious to see if BMW will make a sedan version this time around?

  9. Okay.

The first gen 1-series looks like a cocker spaniel about to pee. The second gen looks like a sad fish.

BMW's love affair with animal-inspired design continues?

  10. At least they got rid of that curved line at the bottom sides…Looks like the fool thing was bent up at each end. The front just looks stupid but I am sure the bratty little designers were going for unique.
