Tata Nano

Last Updated:

There it is. the cheapest new car in the world.
In India for $2500.
Sure it’s crappy, slow etc… But hey, i’s $2500. At least it looks modern.
It’ll get the work done in poor countries.

And yes, it is from the same Tata that is buying Jaguar and Land Rover…

  1. “It’ll get the work done in poor countries.”

What work might that be, decreasing the population?

  2. Christ, what the hell are those, 9″ wheels? What a freakin’ joke. Even the Chinese laugh at this.

  3. That solves my mystery problem with getting a replacement wheel for my Chinese built riding lawn mower. They were all diverted to India to go under this car.

  4. For $2500 I could get a ’95 Cutlass Ciera that would be safer, more reliable, and… sad, but true… better looking than this thing. Transportation at it’s absolute worst.

  5. Are those 10″ rims? Also, style points for the criss-cross wipers.

Haha, the word verification is lilkim!

  6. To build a car that can’t sustain a speed of over 35mph or else the wheel bearings will deteriorate. To have entire developing countries driving disposable vehicles is going to have a negative effect on the environment or passenger safety. There is a certain point where cars simply cannot get smaller and cheaper… regardless of whatever third-world country it might be sold. This thing is irresponsible.

  7. Its not so crappy Vince.
This car is far more relavant to the modern world than all the overweight, unnceccesarry crossovers/SUVs most carmakers are focusing on. Cheap, economical and modern – this is what most of the world needs and wants in a car.
This car will allow Tata to become a household word in cars, around the world. And, yes, Tata will buy Jag and LR, though these brands will remain independent of other Tata cars. Wake up and smell the curry.

  8. I’m having trouble wrapping my mind around how small those wheels are… surely there like 10 inch diameter or less!

Why do we need cheap brand new cars when it is much better for the environment and your ego to buy a used-car for about the same amount?

I wouldn’t expect this to be any more reliable than a used car either- but at least with a used car you expect some quirky failures, like an old dog with bad bowels or something. This inherently defeats all the reasons for buying a new car.

  9. small tires + bad roads dont make a great combo, those tires wouldnt even work in my hood, we got pot holes bigger than them treads ! i say put some dubs on that tub !

    Peace out…

  10. They expect to sell a million of them immediately when it’s released later this summer! That’s a lot of rupees!

  11. I actually think it’s cool. I like it more than the Smart (although it’s not likely to be as safe nor available stateside).

  12. I’d rather drive a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe. In fact, this thing looks like a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe.

    Oh my my my!

  13. “This car is far more relavant to the modern world than all the overweight, unnceccesarry crossovers/SUVs most carmakers are focusing on. Cheap, economical and modern – this is what most of the world needs and wants in a car.”

Yeah right. The Nano is indeed cheap and most likely economical, but modern? And how safe is this thing. How does it perform in safety tests? Let’s see what you say after someone careens off the road trying to avoid hitting a cow and hits something that folds it up like an accordian. Most likely the poor sap will have to be buried in it since it’ll be too much work seperating the body parts from the twisted metal.

  14. Hey, we can’t all be driving around in SUVs like rich, fat, American consumer pigs.

This car will replace the scooter that many people drive instead.

I wonder how many snotty comments Henry Ford heard when he first made cars available to the masses.

  15. “Hey, we can’t all be driving around in SUVs like rich, fat, American consumer pigs.”

Some of us who work hard and earn a good living like driving around in a nice car, not some wind-up toy like the Nano. If that makes us “rich, fat, American consumer pigs”, than too f-cking bad. What, are you jealous?

“I wonder how many snotty comments Henry Ford heard when he first made cars available to the masses.”

Considering there weren’t a whole lot of better built, safer more modern cars to compare his first car to, I’d say not many.

  16. “I wonder how many snotty comments Henry Ford heard when he first made cars available to the masses.”

He didn’t hear any. All the juvenile minds of his generation were out holding jobs instead of living in Mom’s basement on the computer.

  17. Now when this thing runs out of gas, do the occupants put their feet through the floor and walk it along?

  18. Comparing this thing to the Model T is brilliant. I have absolutely no doubt that this little turd is every bit as reliable, safe, and comfortable as a Ford from 90 years ago.

  19. Let’s see what you say after someone careens off the road trying to avoid hitting a cow and hits something that folds it up like an accordian. Most likely the poor sap will have to be buried in it since it’ll be too much work seperating the body parts from the twisted metal.

How do you feel about people driving motorcycles?

  20. I’ll bet my Harley handles a lot better than the Nano, especially since it’s engineering is superior, I’ve been properly instructed in riding and aware of the fact I’m riding a vehicle with little surrounding it’s rider. How many potential Nano drivers will get the same level of instruction before they drive off in their new car? Have you ever been to India? I’ve been there 5 times, and believe you me, a lot of the drivers over there display little formal drivers ed beyond turning the car on and stepping on the gas. Right of way? You’ve got to be kidding. Speed limits? Yeah right. Turn signals, obeying traffic signals? Maybe next time. It’s not as bad in the cities because of the traffic, but it can still make NYC traffic look downright tame in comparison. Subpar training and cheap, questionably-built (no crash tests yet) cars is not a good combination.

  21. Now I know what car “Matt” from Dell tech support will be unwidning in after a long day at the offce.

  22. He didn’t hear any. All the juvenile minds of his generation were out holding jobs instead of living in Mom’s basement on the computer.

You made my point for me. Thank you.

Who was Henry Ford targeting for sales of the Model T if not those working hard and holding a job?

Like so many in India, eh?

  23. i think most of the comments here are missing the point. india is like 100 years behind the u.s. in the automotive market, it’s almost impossible to buy a used car because there arent many there in the first place.

cheap cars like this tata mobilize the masses and put some cars (and competition, it seems) on the road. it even looks like a nice little small car. sure, it doesnt come with a radio, air conditioning, or other frivolities (hey, it even has fog lights!), but tata deserves credit for spending the time to design something revolutionary. besides, why complain about a car that will never be sold in your country?

this car is like the $100 laptop

  24. “this car is like the $100 laptop” your comments were well thought out. People are missing the point of this car. Also, I’m not surprised by the often racist connotations about India. Expect Tata to continually be in the news. The company is going places.

  25. Why aren’t the Chicken Little, global warming alarmists up in arms over the Nano? While those of us who know the joys of driving can appreciate more people the world over getting a chance at the same thing, environazis should be protesting more people driving and thus more of those nasty greenhouse gases. According to their junk science, the Nano is a very bad thing. Oh my my, very bad indeed!

  26. hey i find it cute its not a bad desing hey the smart is very expecive too and in those countries the income level is not that high just keep in mind this will be safe than let say 4 people on a scooter i kinda like the idea and its kinda cute id trade in my big van for this no joke and with the new gas prices hey why not go green thats what i say the onlything is those ugly tires but who cares this is modern and cute way to go tata

  27. Why aren’t global warming alarmists up in arms over the Nano?

Actually we are, but thanks for highlighting the important issue of transportation via personal vehicles. You must surely be aware and disturbed of single-occupant SUV drivers if you’re concerned about the Nano.

Again, thank you for the attention you are bringing to environmental consciousness.

  28. I saw pics of this yesterday in an Indian site and I think that, for the prize and the size (it’s shorter than the original Mini!), it doesn’t look bad at all. I would actually consider buying one as a second car for city errands, heck, it’s the same prize as a flatscreen TV set! If these things come to Europe, Smart with their overpriced two-seaters might be in even bigger trouble than they already are. But we still have to see how it will do in the crash tests.BTW, Tata already has competition:https://malteshashrit.wordpress.com/2008/01/09/bajaj-makes-a-media-appearance-with-their-small-car-prototype/
