Last Updated:

Pretty amazings specs on this one:

-224 HP from a Diesel/Electric powertrain
-44 mpg!

Not sure yet about a production verion.
But for 2009, expect a Hybrid ML450 with 340hp and 30mpg. No diesel on this one.

  1. 224 HP in an S Class? That thing’s gonna be sssslllllooooowwwwww. I don’t care how many mpg’s it gets. Why would someone want to pay that kind of money for this kind of car and get beaten from a light from a 10 year old Geo Metro?

  2. Benz has a wonderful history of fine automobiles that aren’t just about 0-60 times. Some of their best cars have been diesels that made do with lackluster acceleration, but made up for it with mileage, durability, and riding-on-rail, high-speed performance.

That said, this Benz is not going to necessarily be slow because of horsepower alone. Given a diesel’s torque, an electric powerplant is likely to give it the oomph needed to satisfy most people.

You’re assuming it will be slow, but a Benz owner with this “kind of money” doesn’t care if they impress you or any Geo owner. They’ve bought into a solid automotive investment, not a hot rod for some insecure, stoplight guido.

  4. They will use the electric motor/transmission developed by GM. GM then let DCX and BMW to buy into it and spread the cost and continue to develop it. The higher the volume the better the business case. The first use of it will be in GMs Yukon and Tahoe hybrids coming out this fall. I think the 228 hp claimed is for the diesel engine only. The electric motors would add considerably more.
