Fuel cell that works!

The concept shown 11 months ago is now drivable.
Honda claims this could be on sale in 2008 in the US and Japan.
One tough competiton for the next Prius.
HP:129
Pollution:0

Let’s hope the design also inspires the next Accord…

  1. Thats a pretty bold move. Probably too bold and it certianly blows GMs fuel cell equinox right out of the water.

Wow, and such a unique, modern design for a vehicle that probably won’t sell too well. But who knows, hybrids took off. Does anyone know where people can actually get the hydrogen fuel?

  2. Honda is going to be selling a home hydrogen generator/fuel station option for 3-5K.
Earlier reports it is the size of an outdoor a/c unit or home generator that uses either electric or solar power to split water into hydrogen and vents oxygen. “Free” hydrogen fuel.

  4. Yikes. Lot’s of words come to mind when looking at the FCX, and “pretty” isn’t one of them. Why the need to make such cars look like something a 7-year-old would draw? At least the Equinox looks like aregular vehicle, this heap looks like a special effect from a straight-to-DVD scifi movie.

  5. absolutely stunning. This is exactly what I thought cars would look like in 2006 back when I was 5. Thank you, Honda, for everything.

  6. What makes Honda such a great company is that it competes with itself.
Honda already makes the best cars, so improvements are made as vehicles are created to improve over existing Hondas.
I hope the next Accord follows the sleek styling, but the Accord must be comfortable in the rear seat and that usually means a less racy shape.
In any case, the next Accord will be a winner.

  7. Does anyone know where people can actually get the hydrogen fuel?

Well, in California there are hydrogen pumps at gas stations.

The most common (and cheapest) way of actually making it is from a molecule that’s a combo of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and a few other things (water is too hard to get it from, at least cheaply). When hydrogen is obtained, molecule releases CO2 (and a few other not-as-bad things). But even when you count that into the equation, hydrogen is way more efficient than gasoline.

  8. The short answer is, you can’t (get the hydrogen fuel). But that won’t stop every pseudo-environmentalist wannabe from trading in their overpriced Prius for one. And what is it with the Japanese and their need to package these technologies into ridiculous looking vehicles? Can’t they just make a Fuel Cell Accord and save their customers the indignity of having to drive around in something that looks like it was intended for circus use?

  9. yeah, i was wrong… Hond ais working on a 2008 clean diesel too, along with this fuel cell car.
Well, Big 2.5, where’s your hyrbid CARS, clean diesels, fuel cells, by 08(rhetoric as per usual?).

They’ll really be mad when Hyundai brings their fuel cell here by(or as a ) 2010 model.
    LOL.
If this thing is not priced to the moon(too high) it’ll sell, especially in area of easily obtainable(CA?) hyrdogen.
Unless they use a “Solid” pack I read about(BMW?).

  10. Looks great, and uber japanese.

Just drop a regular gasoline engine and this thing will sell just fine.

  11. we have some real winner comments here. Some sound like trhey are from my redneck neighbors, bashing the design, some are “where’s the fuel from(guess they did not read abotu the PHILL at home refueling?), and on and on. ignroance is bliss, must be a lot of blissful people posting~!

Go drive your Cobalts and be happy.

The rest of the world isn’t California. Thank God because Hellifornia was a key state in arresting mass transportation, destroying it, and worshiping the automobile.

Now it pretends to be the nation’s savior?

    Pahleeze. Spare us the melodrama.

  13. if you hate California so much why would you waste your time reading a site called “the HOLLYWOOD extra”???
And whay would you insult me knowing I live there???

Everyone loves to HATE California just because they can’t afford to live here.

It’s not hatred of California, just disappointment in its role in killing mass transit and its worship of the automobile. Other states are as just as guilty.

Besides, if if money were the issue, one would live in Connecticut before they’d live in California.

I don’t hate California. Those are your words, not mine. But I read your site becasue it’s interesting and unique.

And whay would you insult me knowing I live there???

I didn’t insult you. I used California as a model of American hypocrisy towards conservation versus the love of the automobile. I could have as easily said Detroit, Michigan. Knock the chip off your shoulder.

Honda has been a leader in clean engines, better fuel-economy, and alternative fuel cars. California, more than any state, should love this FCX.

Based on your obtuse post, you must be one of those blissful people. Just because someone is critical of a – “gasp” – Honda design, you feel the need to label them “rednecks”? Than after all that you make an obviously crass mention of the Chevy Cobalt. Talk about ignorant. BTW, ever hear of spellcheck?

Oh, and I drive an ’06 Accord, and I pray this thing doesn’t morph into the next Accord.

  17. I would not buy a Honda unless it was cheaper than a comparable Toyota product.
They always (seem to)cost more, yet,Honda is in 9th place in worldwide sales, and Toyota is in 2nd place, right behind GM.
Even Hyundai/Kia is 6th place, and Nissan 7th.

They maybe need something like this for global sales to pick up?
Build it, price it right, and it should do well.
As for the Cobalt:Please, people, Go READ VINCE’S POST/STORY ABOUT THE JUNK. If You DON’T agree, then feel free to…..
Tell Vince he knows nothing about the Cobalt.

  18. When you say honda’s cost more do you mean that transaction price is higher or that the total cost of owenership is higher? One reason that the transaction costs for Hondas are higher is that they are not trying to sell more cars than GM and Ford, so they don’t have to sell for less to push inventories. Look at resdiuals and quality reports. Honda’s typically have higher quality scores and residuals that tend to be equal or higher. Higher residuals means lower cost of ownership.

  19. Well the first thing is that Honda has the ability to mass produce a FCX right now. But, they don’t. Why you might ask the reason is a simple and that is that it is made by Honda so every single little detail has to be just right. And for the “Does anyone know where people can actually get the hydrogen fuel?” Honda is also producing a HOME PHIll station just like the Civic GX uses but with hydrogen created by water. I think(opinion) that the car reflects its Technological advances so it should look like a car that a alien designed. Oh ya, don’t forget about the biofabric seats which are made out of organic material(not polyester) and have ben tested to Honda’s standards. Oh and saying Honda is the 9th in Global sales is bad in Honda fashion its not Honda has never tried to be number one in sales they just make the best quality, reliable and fun to drive cars ever made. If you don’t believe me just drive a ’03-’04 Honda Odyssey and when your getting on the high way just push the pedal down and you will see and hear Honda magic.

  20. isn’t this a Diesel Fuel Cell, Vince? I think https://www.thecarconnection.com/ reported(I read it at 3am EST…so i could have read it incorrcetly) that this car will use Diesel fuel, and feul cell, to convert the fuel over to water/electricity(o r am I thinking of another Honda?).
